Thomas von Zglinicki, Professor of Cellular Gerontology, globally renowned scientist on cellular ageing, agreed to work with Near East University Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics

Professor of Cellular Gerontology, Thomas von Zglinicki, who is a founding member of the basic biology branch of the Newcastle Ageing Institute and its present scientific director, probes closer the causes of ageing and age related diseases. As a medical scientist at Newcastle University, one of the leading universities of England, Professor Thomas von Zglinicki is among rare scholar researchers including Professor Nedime Serakıncı from Near East University, who have been leaving their marks on world’s leading discoveries regarding telomere biology. Professor Thomas von Zglinicki has signed an agreement with Near East University regarding joint project and academic publishing.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University, within the frame of the agreement, Professor Thomas von Zglinicki will come to Near East University at regular intervals to give seminars and carry out joint projects.

He gave seminars on Biology of Ageing…

Professor Zglinicki, who visited Near East University as the invitee of Professor Nedime Serakınci, Head of Center of Excellence and Genetics and Cancer Diagnosis-Research Center, lectured and gave seminars to students studying at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. Besides, he gave two seminars on ageing open for everyone.

Throughout his visit, Professor Thomas von Zglinicki, who had series of meetings with Professor Nedime Serakıncı and NEU vice Rector Professor Fahreddin Sadıkoğlu, signed an agreement regarding information exchange, cooperation in joint projects and academic publishing. Within the frame of the agreement, Professor Zglinicki will come to Near East University to carry out joint projects and give seminars periodically. With its devotion to innovation and scientific studies, Near East University is adamant to maintain this momentum within its body to boost the scientific research capabilities.

He has been probing on Cellular and Molecular Biology of Ageing…

As a forerunner of research studies on the connection of DNA telomeres to ageing, Professor Thomas Zglinicki continues to probe on cellular and molecular biology of ageing.

He was the first to discover oxidative stress and resulting DNA damage as a major cause of telomere shortening and to propose telomere length as a biomarker of ageing in humans.

His principal research interest is in understanding the cellular and molecular signaling pathways connecting DNA damage responses (specifically emanating from dysfunctional telomeres) with mitochondrial function and metabolism, thus causing and maintaining cell senescence, and how these contribute to organism ageing. He published over 200 papers on cell and molecular biology of ageing, resulting in an h-index of 65 in Google Scholar.
