The First Faculty of Nursing of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established under the umbrella of Near East University

The First Faculty of Nursing of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established under the body of Near East University with the approval of the Council of Higher Education and the Higher Education Planning, Evaluation Accreditation and Coordination Council (YÖDAK).

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press & Public Relations Office of the Near East University, the Department of Nursing, which has continued its educational activities under the umbrella of the Faculty of Health Sciences so far, will carry out its educational activities as the Faculty of Nursing from now on. Professor Nuran Bayraktar has been appointed as the dean of the faculty.

Faculty of Nursing with its broad competent academic staff and dynamic structure is a vibrant intellectual community that follows the developments in science and medicine. The overriding aim of the faculty is to ensure an excellent and high-tech equipped educational environment required to acquire the best professional knowledge through participant-driven theoretical and practical education in compliance with standards set by national and international bodies.

Near East University is the First University in TRNC Offering Undergraduate Nursing Education
The history of nursing education in Cyprus: The first nursing school was established in Nicosia in 1973 under the umbrella of the Ministry of Health and served as ‘Nursing and Midwifery School’ by offering associate degree programs for secondary school graduates till 1990. Then, it began to offer three-year programs for lyceum graduates under the name of Nursing Vocational School. The Nursing Vocational School carried out its educational activities under the umbrella of the Ministry of Health until 2006 with physical, social and academic support of Near East University within the frame of the protocol that signed between TRNC Ministry of Health and Near East University in 2004. With an additional protocol in the academic year of 2006-2007, the first undergraduate students were placed with a student selection and placement examination held by YODAK. In the academic year of 2007-2008, the school continued to offer undergraduate programs as well as graduate programs as the Department of Nursing under the umbrella of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Near East University. Besides, the former graduates of the school were provided with opportunity to receive 4-year undergraduate education by vertical transfer. Thus, nursing education at the undergraduate level in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus started at the Near East University for the first time and nursing education offered by NEU became internationally valid through quality programs complying with global standards.

It met the Nurse Workforce Demand of the Country…
Since its establishment, the Department of Nursing of Near East University, which is the educational ground of many successful nurses, has played a crucial role in meeting the nurse workforce demand of our country. In order to provide a new momentum to nursing education, the Department of Nursing, upon the approval of YÖK and YÖDAK, has rolled up its sleeves to maintain its quality education as the Faculty of Nursing. The Faculty of Nursing aims not only raise highly qualified nurses equipped with comprehensive nursing knowledge, skills and professional ethics via undergraduate programs but also provide opportunities for graduates for their advanced academic and professional careers through graduate programs grounded on information production.

First Nursing Graduate Programs have been launched in the Lead of Near East University….
Near East University Faculty of Nursing, formerly Department of Nursing, is the pioneer offering master’s degree and PhD programs in nursing in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Department of Nursing, known as Near East University- Faculty of Nursing now, began to offer master’s degree programs under the umbrella of Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences in 2007. A year later, in 2008, it launched PhD programs in nursing. It has played a crucial role not only in meeting the nurse demand of our country but also in paving the way for graduates to build a distinguished career over the others.
