2015-2016 Academic Year graduates of Near East University Faculty of Medicine received their diplomas with a glorious ceremony that realized with the participation of high level protocol including TRNC Assembly President, ministers, MPs, and top government officials.
Near East University Faculty of Medicine Graduation Ceremony for the academic year 2015-2016 was held at AKKM Main Hall with participation of TRNC Assembly President Sibel Siber, TRNC Health Minister Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu, independent MPs Hasan Taçoy and Menteş Gündüz, NEU Founding Rector Dr. Suat İ. Günsel, NEU Board of Trustees Chairman Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel, vice rectors, Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan, faculty deans, faculty members, guests, students and their parents.
The graduation ceremony began with stand in silence and followed by national anthem. The music recital received standing ovation. Then, Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Prof Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, NEU vice Rector, Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu, TRNC Minister of Health, and Sibel Siber, TRNC Assembly President, delivered opening remarks respectively.
Prof. Dr. Mocan: Near East University Faculty of Medicine has become an internationally respected center of quality education, scientific research and unmatched health services
“Near East University Faculty of Medicine places great value on academic excellence, medical research, integrity, interdisciplinary collaboration, professional ethics and competence. The academic staff of NEU Faculty of Medicine is dedicated to ensure the educational, intellectual, professional, and personal development of our distinguished students, who are deeply committed to the study and practice of medicine, and to medical research. We set foot on the road of medical education with the most up-to-date scientific technology and infrastructure seven years ago. Today, we have become an internationally known and respected center of quality education, scientific research and unmatched health services. Training and learning continue lifelong in medicine. Medical science needs altruism. It is an arduous and long termed process. Those who set foot on this road will be going on their way as go-getter persons without boredom and reluctance. Medical science is in a constant development as a result of scientific research and technological advances regarding medicine. Therefore, lifelong learning is the key to ensuring that doctors keep their professional knowledge up to date and benefit from the latest treatment techniques in order to offer safer and the most effective treatment options for their patients” said she.
Addressing to graduates, Professor Mocan underlined the crucial role of physicians in ensuring public health. “Throughout your education you have been equipped with the most up-to date comprehensive knowledge, skills and practice and now you are ready to begin your career as competent physicians who are able to take the advantage of the new technologies to provide early and accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. You are good physicians capable of utilizing new technologies and updating yourselves. You are inquisitive, questioning and full of love and ready to assume roles and responsibilities in preventive medicine to promote and contribute to both public health and community-based educational approaches. Wherever you go, you will take active roles in medical field and represent our faculty as competent, keen and researcher physicians. While you feel pride of your faculty, which is an internationally esteemed destination of contemporary education and science, we will also be proud of you. I wish all of you good luck on this long and challenging way” said Professor Mocan.
Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ: “We will be always at the side of our young colleagues with all our heart, knowledge, experience and wish of success”
“You will not only become a fine doctor, but you will be a doctor who can make the world healthier by giving hope and providing contemporary and safe treatment options for health issues and contribute to our health through the most innovative medical techniques that is available. Science is a matter of expertise and competence. Medical science needs altruism. It is an arduous and long termed process. In every step that you cover while fulfilling your professions, with all of our heart, knowledge, experience and wish for success, we will be always at your side” said he.
Health Minister Dr. Sucuoğlu: A physician should set an example for the public with his/her behavior
“Doctoring requires exemplary behavior; physicians should set a model for the public. I have no doubt that our young colleagues are well equipped to ensure the best healthcare and treatment to restore the patient’s health through the most innovative medical techniques that is available. I wish health, happiness and continuing success for all graduates. I congratulate them with all my heart” said he.
TRNC Assembly President Dr. Siber: You have taken a great load over your shoulders by becoming physicians. With this responsibility, I am sure that you will exert all required effort and achieve a good career.
“In order to achieve success in your career, you should be competent in all areas of your practice. However, competence is more than just medical skills and knowledge; it also comprises practicing safely and effectively. The doctor-patient relationship is the foundation of the practice of medicine. You will be successful physicians, if you love people and reflect your patience, compassion, altruism, trustworthiness in your services, and feel happy with every patient that you restore his/her health. It is a nice but arduous profession. I and the Minister of Health are also physicians. However, no
one becomes a doctor in order to be a politician. To be a politician is temporary; your profession is fundamental. I urge all graduates to be devoted to their profession and never stop learning. I wish all of you continuing success throughout your career” said she.
Following the opening speeches, the diploma ceremony was realized. The graduates were presented their diplomas after swearing the Hippocratic Oath.
Students that graduated with the highest grade point average were awarded with gold medals
Faculty’s top graduate was presented the gold medal and her diploma by TRNC Assembly President Sibel Siber.
Minister of Health Faiz Sucuoğlu, NEU Board of Trustees Chairman Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel, NEU vice Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, and academics took the stage one by one and presented the graduates their diplomas.
The ceremony ended with taking group photos and throwing graduation caps.
