The work of Academic Members of Near East University Faculty of Engineering received a lot of attention at the International Symposium on Industry 4.0 and Applications (ISIA 2017)

It was revealed that the International Symposium on Industry 4.0 and Applications (ISIA 2017) was realised at Karabük University and the scientific study of the Academic Members of the Faculty of Engineering Assist. Prof. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin, Assist. Prof. Dr. İlker Özşahin and Academic Member Berna Uzun titled as “Evaluation of Nuclear Medicine Imaging Algorithms by using Fuzzy PROMETHEE (Fuzzy Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation) Method” received a lot of attention by the attendees of the symposium.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin: “Neither the hospital technicians nor the producing companies are able to make a clear decision on which algorithms have a better performance in terms of fast and clear image formation.”

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Assist. Prof. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin made a statement on the matter and expressed that the devices widely used in nuclear medicine, such as Positron Emission Tomography; Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography; Compton Camera; Dynamic Cardiac Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography; and Brain Positron Emission Tomography, made use of many different imaging algorithms with different features to obtain physiology and anatomy images. Some of the most used algorithms are Filtered Back Projection, Expectation-maximisation (EM) algorithm, Maximum-likelihood (ML) algorithm, Maximum-likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM), and Statistical Optimization algorithm. However, neither the hospital technicians nor the big firms such as Philips and General Electric can make a clear decision on which algorithm has a better performance in terms of producing fast and clear images.

Department of Nuclear Medicine and Radiology, alongside big firms which develop these techniques were provided suggestions regarding decision making...

Özşahin provided further information on the matter and expressed that as a technique that as a multi-criteria decision aid system which permits the building of outranking between different alternatives, the Fuzzy PROMETHEE (Fuzzy Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation) Method was suggested. Additionally, she stated that a detailed study was conducted on the performance of the image formation algorithms and parameters which have an impact on the images formed in nuclear medicine. Moreover, she added that the data collected from this study on the performance of the algorithms were evaluated with Fuzzy PROMETHEE method. As a result, the fastest and highest-definition image formation technique was identified; the pros and cons of these algorithms were compared. Thus, both the Departments of Nuclear Medicine and Radiology, alongside big firms which develop these techniques were provided suggestions with regards to decision making.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin ended her words by expressing that this study was expected to shed light on future work to be carried out to improve and further develop Nuclear Medicine imaging techniques. Moreover, this symposium will be held in Malaysia next year and an agreement has been reached to hold the symposium at Near East University in 2019.
