Academic Member of Near East University, Prof. Dr. Ghadir Golkarian, attended the 6th Multicongress held at Gaziantep Hasan Kalyoncu University as a guest speaker and shared information on “The problems of 2nd language on mother tongue in the field of education.”

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, more than 300 scientists and academicians attended the congress where Prof. Dr. Ghadir Golkarian provided details regarding the pros and cons of the second language on the mother tongue in multinational conditions; which are all connected with linguistics and education.

Prof. Dr. Golkarian expressed that in multinational countries, as one of the main problems in the mother tongue, the-language assimilation problem not only disrupted the country's multi-ethnic spectrum, but also negatively affected the potential of being bilingual and turn it into a disadvantage.

Thinking in the mother tongue and speaking in the second language causes inadequacy in perception and realisation…
According to Prof. Dr. Golkarian, one of the issues raised by the development of linguistic science is the impact of the mother tongue or the first language on the individual. Such that once a person starts learning a second language, the linguistic, morphological and philosophical aspects of the first language, as well as the word shape, remain under pressure. Furthermore, thinking in the mother tongue, but speaking in the second language, renders the individual insufficient as in perception and cognitive reflection. Moreover, Prof. Dr. Golkarian stated that one of the important problems that arose in some countries which have ethnic structure is the language of choice or the official language. For instance, if education is given in the official language then enough significance on the first language is not placed which then caused the first language to disappear; and this is considered to be against the basic rights of human beings.

Language Programming Plan is required in Bilingual Language Education System …
In addition to the above, Prof. Dr. Golkarian asserted that in today's conditions, the issue of bilingualism is the main subject of the macro-sociolinguistic-debate. Therefore, the bilingual language education system in the community required a language programming plan. Thus, problems can be at the lowest level and regular results are made possible in education systems. So, the process of planning with language programming is usually carried out by states, however states focus on official or national language rather than domestic and ethnic languages. In this context, the spelling guide, the formation of new terms, analysis and research on the language features are again suggested by the central government. In addition, the emphasis on the second language without paying attention to the mother tongue gradually decreases the ability of the individual in conceptual decomposition in synonymous and anonymous, as well as in sensitive issues in language structure and syntax. Therefore, Prof. Dr. Golkarian stat this was one of the most important issues that should be addressed; whether the second language or not, the intellectual, knowledge and internal view of the individual, or the discussion of the development of the individual's language all become a part of the matter.

Prof. Dr. Golkarian emphasised that limited period of weekly programming in the mother tongue could positive contribute to cultural and artistic potentials of the country, alongside the official language would allow for richness.
