The Northern Cyprus Medical Students’ Association was founded with the initiative of Near East University and was founded to represent the medical students studying in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus at national and international platforms. It was pointed out that recently, the first General Assembly of the Association for the Academic Term 2017-2018 was recently held.
Furthermore, the general assembly of the Northern Cyprus Medical Students’ was realised with the participation of the medical students studying in Near East University, University of Kyrenia and Eastern Mediterranean University. The assembly included presentations made by students and the determination of the Executive Committee for the 2017-2018 Term.
The General Assembly started with a speech made by the Chairman of the 2016-2017 Term Gülperi Ateş, later to be followed by the highly motivating speech made by the Vice Rector of Near East University, Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ. Subsequently, the General Assembly continued with the panel presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kaya Süer titled as “How should the follow-up protocol of Health Provider that is HBV/HCV/HIV positive be?”

It was stated that the General Assembly was held bilingually, in Turkish and English, members of the Turkish Medical Students’ Committee (TurkMSIC) participated in the presentations given on “student representation”; “presentation skills”; “building a team and effective meeting techniques”; “human rights proclamation”; “civil society and volunteering”; “leadership and creativity”; “time and crisis management” and “project management”.
Providing further details, it was stated that Vice Chair of Foreign Affairs of TurkMSIC, Edanur Köse; Director of TurkMSIC Capacity Improving Support Unit, Arda Tufan; Executive Assistant of TurkMSIC Human Rights and Peace Task Force, Mihran Kızıl; Manager of Internship Exchange Task Force, Buse Ertabaklar; Director of TurkMSIC Research Exchange Task Force, Melike Saba Erdinç; Vice Head of Acıbadem TurkMSIC, Kaan Mert Güven; and International Federation of Medical Students’ Association (IFMSA) Jordan, Ala’ Riyad Bal’awi participated in the General Assembly.

At the meeting held by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Medical Students’ Association, in which 3 universities from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are represented alongside 1000 other medical students studying at faculties of medicine, the Executive Committee for the 2017-2018 Academic Term was determined and the duties to be carried out were delegated.
As a result of the election, the Chairman of the Executive Committee was elected as Parla Ulual, Vice Chair and Person in Charge of Foreign Affairs, Arda Atamtürk, General Secretary, Selen Verep and Financial Coordinator Fatma Elagöz.
On the other hand, the members of the Managing Board were elected as the following: Director of Human Rights and Peace Zeliha Kocaismail; Director of Public Health, Erdoğan Mete Yalçın; Director of Internship Exchange, Simge Cibros; Director of Research Exchange Arda Yaşa; Director of Project and Initiative Support Unit Asu Özince; Director of Capacity Improving Support Unit Dilara Ünalan; Director of Press and Communication Support Unit Ali Eren Öztürkoğlu and Member of Supervisory Board İrem Karagöz.

The medical students studying at Faculties of Medicine in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will be represented at national and international platforms by the newly elected dynamic members stated above. Furthermore, due to exchange programs for internships and research will provide the students opportunities to develop their professional knowledge and skills later to enable them to be successful in their careers. Additionally, these will provide the chance for medical students to be aware and respectful to other cultures, communities and their related health issues.
