Having been established with the initiative of the Near East University, North Cyprus Medical Students' Association has become a member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) with the approval of 72 countries.

With the approval of 72 member countries, North Cyprus Medical Students' Association has become a member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), which is one of the world's largest student-run associations that represents medical student associations across the world and aims to raise awareness on global health.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the Near East University, the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) held their 66th Meeting General Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania with participation of more than 900 medical students coming from 90 countries around the globe. With this General Assembly, a voting for electing new member countries was realized and 72 countries including Southern Cyprus and Greece approved the membership of North Cyprus Medical Students’ Association. Thus, North Cyprus Medical Students’ Association has become a new member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA).

Having been established in 2015 with the initiative of the Near East University under the guidance of the Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, the Near East University Medical Students’ Association (NEUMSA) has set it as its mission to represent the medical students at national and international platforms. In the same year, NEUMSA initiated efforts to be a member of Turkish Medical Students’ International Committee (TURKMSIC), to enable internship exchange between Near East University Faculty of Medicine and medicine faculties in Turkey. Consequently, a protocol was signed and internship exchange program was initiated in 2016. In 2017, a research exchange program was initiated and the exchange of students between NEU Faculty of Medicine and faculties of medicine in Turkey was realized. In order to be the voice of medical students studying at faculties of medicine in North Cyprus, NEUMSA launched Medical Students’ Association North Cyprus (MSANC) in 2017 and initiated works towards becoming a member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA). The efforts have brought results in the 66th Meeting of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) General Assembly. Receiving the approval of 72 member countries, the Medical Students’ Association of North Cyprus has become a member of IFMSA.

Touching upon the significance of becoming a member of IFMSA, NEU vice Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ delivered information regarding the issue. "The International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA),represents, connects and engages every day with an inspiring and engaging network of 1.3 million medical students from 135 national member organizations (NMOs) in more than 130 countries around the globe. IFMSA runs internship and research exchange programs endorsed by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME), the Federation of European Neurosciences Societies (FENS) and the European Society for Emergency Medicine (EuSEM). These programs are well accepted by WHO and UNESCO. Each year, more than 13.000 medical students embark in medical internship exchange programs to explore health care delivery and health systems in different cultural and social settings. This membership enables the Medical Students' Association of North Cyprus to initiate exchange programs with all faculties of medicine around the globe.

Underlining that the Medical Students' Association had formed not only a scientific but also a social platform, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irfan GÜNSEL, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Near East University, stated that the association would set the way for medical students to become contemporary health professionals who fit the qualifications required in almost every area of life.

NEU Board of Trustees Chairman Assoc. Prof. Dr. GÜNSEL reminded that the association was established with the aim of carrying out activities towards improving the knowledge, visions and skills of the physicians of the future. “Being committed to offering quality education beyond the global standards, we provide our students with the broadest possibilities of science and create learning environments with the latest technologies that they use their creativity. We spare no sacrifices to set the way for our students to establish an outstanding career over the others. IFMSA's membership of the Medical Students' Association of North Cyprus will not only allow access of our medical students to internship and research exchange programs of all faculties of medicine across the world but also provide opportunities for them to gain knowledge and skills required for the practice of medical profession. Since these programs, which are key promoters of intercultural understanding and cooperation amongst medical students that needed in our globalized world, would also play a guiding role for medical students to be an individual that means more than being a medical student” said he.
