New Publication of Near East University: “TRNC Individual Labour Law Course Book”

Academic Member of Near East University Faculty of Law Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Köksal has published a new course book in order to make abstract concepts to be easily understood by Faculty of Law students. The book has been published by Near East University publishing with a title as Individual Labour Law in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the course book titled as the TRNC Individual Labour Law includes decisions given by the TRNC supreme court and most important of all, it is the first of its kind in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Furthermore, rights and obligations of workers and employers are considered in the above mentioned book in addition to a comparison between the Turkish Labour Law and the Labour Act of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The comparison is presented via a table and the book also includes Turkish and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Labour legislation.

A comprehensive and systematic course book on labour law…

In addition to the above, it was expressed that this course book provides detailed information on Individual Labour Law including: Labour Law and Definitions; Employment contract; charge and payment; working hours; paid annual leave and other types of leaves; TRNC Labour Law and Turkish Labour Law comparison; TRNC law on trade unions; TRNC Minimum wages law; collective labour agreement, strike and referendum law; TRNC public holidays and remembrance days law; Turkish Labour Law as full text; Turkish Occupational Health Safety Law; Minimum wage regulations; Turkish employment agency law; Turkish unions and collective labour agreement law; and exemplary decisions.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Köksal emphasised that education on labour law and social security law is gaining more significance and that this significance was not limited to faculties of law, and that it was also necessary in many other fields as well.

Furthermore, he pointed out the importance of occupational safety law and that the concept was divided into four subsections as individual labour law, collective labour law; social security law, and occupational safety law.

In addition to the above, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Köksal asserted that the labour law in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was in accordance with the regulations put forth by the international labour organisation to a large extent; however he stressed that the major drawbacks were issues related to occupational safety and severance pay.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Köksal expressed that the book he wrote was worthy to be taught as a course book for the field of TRNC Labour Law and that the book provides a particular focus on individual labour law aspect of labour law. In this regard, he stated that the book provided comprehensive information on concepts regarding TRNC labour law and employees and employers’ rights and obligations. Furthermore, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Köksal ended his statement on the matter by stating that his book was the first of its kind in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and due to its comprehensive and systematic approach to the issue, including a comparison of the labour law in the TRNC to Turkish Labour Law, in the form of a table, and the exemplary decisions of the supreme court provided in the appendices section of the book, his book could also be beneficial to those who wish to use it as a handbook.
