A natural treatment method to Echinococcus…,

Head of Department of General Surgery of Faculty of Medicine of Near East University and also Head of Cyprus Turkish Balkan Medical Union Association, Prof. Dr. Hasan Besim, has made a significant contribution to literature on the treatment of Echinococcus.

According to the press info release from the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University, Prof. Dr. Hasan Besim made a statement to the Directorate and expressed that many distinguished scientists had attended the 2nd Joint Scientific Session and that his study, which involved the effect of using Oleuropein, isolated from olive tree leaves from the Meseria Plains in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, on Echinococcus had received a lot of interest.

Prof. Dr. Hasan Besim further expressed that Echinococcus was a common disease in the Mediterranean and that his study which was focused on using Oleuropein in the treatment of this disease was the first of its kind, causing this study to be a significant contribution to the literature regarding this disease.

Prof. Dr. Hasan Besim: “I am honoured to have filled a gap in the literature regarding what amount and time period is needed to use Oleuropein for the treatment of Echinococcus, leading the parasite to die.”

Head of Department of General Surgery of NEU Faculty of Medicine and Head of Cyprus Turkish Balkan Medical Union Association Prof. Dr. Hasan Besim said:

“I have conducted other studies on the Echinococcus disease and there are many chemicals used for the treatment of this disease. However, although these kill the parasite within its cyst, they also harm live tissue too. Thus, this leads for a need to seek unharmful treatment methods. While searching the literature, I realised that studies conducted in each region were targeted at using natural products in the region. In order to determine the amount and time needed to use a natural product for the treatment of this disease, I have jointly worked with an academic member of the NEU Department of Pharmacognosist, Prof Dr. İhsan Çalış and as a result of our study, we have identified the amount and time needed to use Oleoresin to treat Echinococcus. I shared our results at the 2nd Joint Scientific Session, held by the French National Academy of Medicine and the study drew the attention of many distinguished scientists attending the session.”

Prof. Dr. Hasan Besim pointed out how proud and honoured he was to have represented the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Near East University in an international meeting and that meetings alike presented opportunities to scientist to discuss and evaluate studies which have the potential to improve science. Moreover, he expressed that a disease as common as Echinococcus needed to be treated, otherwise it could spread and could be fatal. Finding a natural treatment method is therefore a significant step in a matter as important as this. He ended his statement by reemphasising how proud and honoured he was to have successfully represented both the country and the NEU at an international platform.
