Head of Earthquake and Subsurface Exploration Centre of Near East University and Head of Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Prof. Dr. Cavit Atalar, attended the 11th International Conference on Geosynthetics as a guest session moderator.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the 11th International Conference on Geosynthetics (ICG) was held at Coex, in Seul, Korea from September 16 to 21, 2018; a total of 1239 people from 66 different countries attended the conference and 451 presentations were made. Furthermore, it was pointed out that Prof. Dr. Cavit Atalar attended the conference from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and made a presentation titled as “The behaviour of the filled land on soft clay supported by geogrid and concrete pile foundations”. It was stated that he had prepared the presentation with Prof. Dr. Braja Das whose book is widely used in the field of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering; and also with Prof. Dr. Eun Chul Shin from Association of Geotechnical Engineering in Asia.

In addition to the above, it was stated that in his presentation, Prof. Dr. Cavit Atalar provided details on the results of the pilot field study carried out to prevent too much settlement of structures, such as buildings, tanks and walls built on soft clay soil. He explained that the study was conducted with low plasticity clay soil. Moreover, he reported that there was 60% less settlement in buildings that have been constructed with support of geogrid and concrete pile foundation. Furthermore, it was expressed that on the last day of the conference Prof. Dr. Cavit Atalar, attended the general assembly of the International Geosynthetics Society.
