Near East University left a mark with five scientific conferences, three oral presentations and one award at the International Erciyes Medical Genetic Days Congress

The researchers of the Near East University Faculty of Medicine and Experimental Health Sciences Research Center (DESAM) represented Near East University at the 5th International Congress of Erciyes Medicine Genetics Days held in Cappadocia and made verbal presentations and awarded the third prize.

According to the information given by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, at the congress held by Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine and bringing together scientists working in the field of medical genetics, the faculty members of Near East University; Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan, Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Umut Fahrioğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pınar Tulay, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rasime Kalkan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kerem Teralı, specialist Gülten Tuncel Dereboylu, specialist Havva Çobanoğulları, and Veterinarian Meryem Betmezoğlu presented scientific articles.

In the congress, where the latest situation in the world of medical genetics and new ideas such as genes to genomes, sensitive medicine, molecular basis of genetic diseases, human genome organization, cancer genomics, gender development disorders, prenatal diagnosis and reproductive health genetics, current approaches in neurogenetics, scientific studies conducted in Cyprus with the correct diagnosis in genetic diseases were discussed.

Their presentations were the focus of interest…
According to the information provided by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, Near East University Faculty of Medicine faculty member and DESAM Institute Board Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören presented his study titled “Recombination effect and mutation accumulation in the human genome” on the first day of the congress.

On the last day of the conference, under the chairmanship of the Dean of the Near East University Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan, Near East University Medical Faculty Medicine Biology lecturer and DESAM Institute Rare Diseases Research Group researcher Assoc. Prof. Dr. Umut Fahrioğlu presented his study titled “Genetic Counseling Models for Different Disease Groups”, Faculty Member of Medical Genetics Department and Board Member of DESAM Institute, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pınar Tulay presented her study titled “Molecular basis of oocyte development in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome”, DESAM Institute Cell Culture Laboratory Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rasime Kalkan presented her study titled “The availability of epigenetic biomarkers in physiological and pathological conditions” and lecturer at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and DESAM Institute Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Research Group leader Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kerem Teralı made his presentation titled “Biomolecular modeling in medical genetics: A case-based approach to the resolution of silent mutations in disease-related genes”.

Oral presentation award goes to Near East University…
At the conference, researchers of Near East University DESAM Institute Rare Diseases Research Group made presentations of their studies; PhD student in Molecular Medicine and lecturer Gülten Tuncel Dereboylu presented her study titled “Development of evidence-based computerized diagnostic tools for early diagnosis of breast cancer”, specialist Havva Çobanoğulları presented her study titled “Determination of the frequency of CCR5 ∆32 gene variants in the Turkish Cypriot population and the Nigerian and Zimbabwe inhabitants of Northern Cyprus” and veterinarian Meryem Betmezoğlu presented her study titled “Extremely rare situation in a large Turkish family: Rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata type 5”.

As a result of the referee evaluation, DESAM Institute research assistant specialist Gülten Tuncel Dereboylu from Near East University Faculty of Medicine, Medical Biology and Medical Pathology Departments, and lecturers from Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Medical Genetics Department and Bursa Uludağ University Medical Genetics Departments won the third prize.

At the Round Table meeting, genetics in Cyprus was explained…
At the Round Table meeting chaired by the Congress President Prof. Dr. Munis Dundar Turkey and attended by Medical Genetics Association Board Chairman Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Ergün researchers carrying out studies in the field of molecular sciences and genetics at Near East University and Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan shared their experiences.

In this special session held open to all congress participants, suggestions were made by discussing what could be done for the science of genetics in Northern Cyprus. While Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören drew attention to the legal irregularities, deficiencies and difficulties in the field of genetics in Cyprus, all participants expressed their views interactively during the meeting. Coming to a consensus in many aspects with the Turkey Medical Genetics Association board members, it was decided the two communities act together in the future.
