At the conference, researchers of Near East University DESAM Institute Rare Diseases Research Group made presentations of their studies; PhD student in Molecular Medicine and lecturer Gülten Tuncel Dereboylu presented her study titled “Development of evidence-based computerized diagnostic tools for early diagnosis of breast cancer”, specialist Havva Çobanoğulları presented her study titled “Determination of the frequency of CCR5 ∆32 gene variants in the Turkish Cypriot population and the Nigerian and Zimbabwe inhabitants of Northern Cyprus” and veterinarian Meryem Betmezoğlu presented her study titled “Extremely rare situation in a large Turkish family: Rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata type 5”.

As a result of the referee evaluation, DESAM Institute research assistant specialist Gülten Tuncel Dereboylu from Near East University Faculty of Medicine, Medical Biology and Medical Pathology Departments, and lecturers from Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Medical Genetics Department and Bursa Uludağ University Medical Genetics Departments won the third prize.

At the Round Table meeting, genetics in Cyprus was explained...
At the Round Table meeting chaired by the Congress President Prof. Dr. Munis Dundar Turkey and attended by Medical Genetics Association Board Chairman Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Ergün researchers carrying out studies in the field of molecular sciences and genetics at Near East University and Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan shared their experiences.

In this special session held open to all congress participants, suggestions were made by discussing what could be done for the science of genetics in Northern Cyprus. While Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören drew attention to the legal irregularities, deficiencies and difficulties in the field of genetics in Cyprus, all participants expressed their views interactively during the meeting. Coming to a consensus in many aspects with the Turkey Medical Genetics Association board members, it was decided the two communities act together in the future.
