Near East University has been represented at the Biggest Molecular Life Sciences Congress-the 43rd FEBS Congress

Academic Members of Near East University Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Veterinary represented the Near East University at one of the most prestigious congresses held within the European region,  the 43rd FEBS Congress held in Prague, capital city of the Czech Republic, which aims to provide an outstanding international forum in the area of Europe and neighbouring regions for the face to face exchange of knowledge and ideas across the molecular life sciences.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Academic Members of Near East University Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Nazmi Özer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özlem Dalmızrak, Assist. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören, Assist. Prof. Dr. Sevinç Ege; and Academic Member of NEU Faculty of Veterinary Assist. Prof. Dr. Serkan Sayıner and doctorate student Veterinarian Deniz Ceylanlı successfully represented the Near East University at the 43rd FEBS Congress.

The general sessions of the congress were about neurotransmitter release mechanism, mass spectrometry (MS) and proteomic analysis, the structure of Ebola virus and potential therapies, transport of destruction mitochondrial proteins, molecular identification, use of enzyme inhibitor in imaging and drugs,  CRISPR genome editing, diet, mitochondria and energy metabolisms, chromatin dynamics and DNA repair and gene expression models.

The sessions of the congress were held at five different halls and the following issues were taken in hand: chromosome structure and segregation, and drug metabolism, host pathogen interactions, omics technologies, calculations in biology, epitranscriptomics, biochemical processes of cell membrane, RNA synthesis and processing, metal homeostasis and neurodegeneration, cardiometabolic diseases, system biology, cancer pathogenesis and protozoa and immunity, redox biochemistry,  extracellular matrix, plant biochemistry and molecular biology, natural biologic active compounds in nature and food.  Additionally, special sessions were held on molecular life bioethics, value and effect of scientific articles, and gender in science.

Academic Member of Department of Medical Biochemistry of Faculty of Medicine of Near East University, Prof. Dr. Nazmi Özer and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özlem Dalmızrak cooperated on a study on acetylcholinesterase, butyrycholinesterase and inhibition characteristics of glutathione S-transferase pi enzyme of various antidepressants:  protein-ligand docking and interaction profiling and research called The inhibition characteristics of human placental glutathione S-transferase-π by tricyclic antidepressants: amitriptyline and clomipramine stating that it causes non-competitive inhibition and also their positions with significant amino acids .  Additionally, Elavil, fluoxetine and sertraline interactions are examined via in silico modelling and these antidepressants inhibit enzymes at active regions.

Academic Member of Department of Medical Biology of Faculty of Medicine of Near East University Assist. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören and his scientific team made three genuine presentations and discussed disease causing genes and gene variants which they had discovered very recently and made a great contribution to the literature.

Jointly working with the academic Member of Department of Neurology of Faculty of Medicine of Near East University Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahar Kaymakamzade and academic Member of Department of Child-Adolescent Psychology Specialist Dr. Yeliz Engindereli, Assist. Prof. Dr. Ergören identified the gene which causes Joubert syndrome through their study called “Identification of CC2D1A homozygous mutation as a cause of Joubert Syndrome with obsessive compulsive disorder”.

It was also pointed out that the Academic Member of Department of Biochemistry of Faculty of Veterinary of Near East University Assist. Prof Dr Serkan Sayıner and doctorate student Veterinarian Deniz Ceylanlı presented their posters titled as “Protective effect of alpha lipoic acid on apical periodontitis-induced cardiac injury” and “Monitoring of changes in serum antioxidative system parameters in different gestation periods of cows” at the 43rd FEBS Congress, which drew a lot of interest.
