Vice Dean of Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences and Head of Department of Nursing, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz and Assist. Prof. Dr. Burcu Totur Dikmen attended the 26th National Urology Congress-7th National Urologic Nursing Congress.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University Vice Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences and Department of Nursing Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz acted as the chairperson of the 7th National Urologic Nursing Congress and as a panellist in a session; whereas Academic Member of Department of Nursing Assist. Prof. Dr. Burcu Totur Dikmen acted as a panellist at the same congress.

Radiation Safety in Urology

It was pointed out that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz acted as panellist at the session titled as “Radiation Safety in Urology” where radiation was defined; different types of radiation; radiation sources; organisation of the x-ray room; and radiation safety and precautions to be taken were discussed.

At the congress, Assist. Prof. Dr. Burcu Totur Dikmen spoke about Patient Safety During Urological Surgeries and Ethical Issues. She provided information surgical operations such as prostatectomy cystectomy, nephrectomy, and incontinence. She stated that by the end of 1990s, developments in laparoscopy, endourology, robotic surgery and the same-day surgeries were observed and this led to an increase in the number of operations carried out. Therefore, the increase in incidences has caused the necessity to consider patient safety and ethical issues relatively.

Furthermore, Assist. Prof. Dr. Burcu Totur Dikmen expressed that there was a strong need for in-service training courses so as to assure the safety of patients during surgeries and deal with ethical issues. Additionally, she stressed that there was a need to improve the communication among team members, establish ethical consultation units, raise awareness on patient safety, improve environmental conditions, make use of safety during surgery checklist, and medical error reporting.
