Jury Special Award goes to Near East University at International Informatics Congress

Special Jury Prize of the "International Barrier-Free Informatics 2019 (BİLTEVT2019) Congress" held in cooperation of the member institutions of Turkey Barrier-Free Informatics Platform and carried out by the Secretariats of Maltepe University and Celal Bayar University was given to Near East University.

According to the information provided by the Near East University Directorate of Press and Public Relations, the “Barrier-Free Informatics 2019 Award Ceremony was held within the scope of the Congress where the studies were shared under the theme of Universal Design in Information Technologies and calls were made to the software experts for easier access to information. “Special Jury Award" was given to the Near East University for its pioneering activities, workshops, activities and contributions.

The award was presented to Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ who was among the speakers of the Conference. The Director of the Near East University Institute of Educational Sciences, Prof. Dr. Fahriye Altınay; Co-Chair of the Social Research and Development Center Prof. Dr. Zehra Altınay, and President of the TRNC Prime Ministry Disabled Services Coordination Board and Cyprus Orthopedic Disability Association President Günay Kibrit also attended the congress as invited speakers.


Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ: “Barrier-Free Informatics Days will be held at Near East University in December…”
Speaking at the opening speech of the International Barrier-Free Informatics 2019 Congress, Vice Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said "In order to strengthen both scientific and inter-institutional cooperation in this field, Near East University is leading the fulfillment of responsibilities. The studies gained momentum in order to raise the awareness of a barrier-free life and it was proud to be rewarded for the activities carried out by the Near East University's Social Research and Development Center and the TRNC Barrier-Free Informatics Platform, we will surely carry out our activities to increase the contribution of individuals with disabilities to social and economic lives, to benefit from public institution services, education and access to information by using information and technology services".

Stating that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is the partner country of 2019, “International Barrier-Free Informatics 2019 Congress" Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said due to a unanimous decision of the Congress the TRNC Barrier-Free Informatics Days will be held on December 2019 at Near East University.

Speaking at the panel session of the Congress, Near East University Institute of Educational Sciences Director Prof. Dr. Fahriye Altınay drew attention to the importance of scientific studies and projects carried out through international cooperation in the field of higher education and barrier-free technologies. Stating that scientific basis will create lasting solutions, Prof. Dr. Altınay presented the outcomes of the activities carried out by the institute in this direction.

Co-Chair of Social Research and Development Center, Prof. Dr. Zehra Altınay, in her presentation said that the center has taken the first step in barrier-free informatics since 2013 and thanks to the newly established monitoring committee, they have fulfilled the function of monitoring and auditing rights in every field as an institution. Stating that the basis of permanent sustainable activities has been ensured by providing coordination between the Near East University and Prime Minister's Disability Services Coordination Board, Prof. Altınay gave information about the barrier-free database they have established in cooperation.

Significant outputs obtained...
At the end of the conference, where it was emphasized that information technologies are very important for the participation of disabled people in education and economic life and that the disabled people are to take part in every area of life, important outcomes were obtained. Strategic steps such as allowing employment for disableds, increasing disabled scholarship and consultancy services, increasing professional development programs according to employment conditions, fulfilling the unimpeded program conditions of those who have priority in employment in higher education programs, ensuring barrier-free technologies and organizing social responsibility courses in higher education institutions were determined.
