It was announced that Near East University Experimental Health Sciences Research Centre (DESAM) organises periodic conference series and very recently, Academic Member of Department of Physics Engineering of Istanbul Technical University, Prof. Dr. Kerem Cankoçak gave a seminar titled as “What’s going on at the experiments held at CERN? LHC-CERN Physics Experiments beyond the standard model”.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the seminar was held at Near East University Hospital Hall 101 where Prof. Dr. Kerem Cankoçak provided detailed information on basic research carried out at CERN; in addition to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Cankoçak also provided a short definition of CERN and information on the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle at the LHC-CERN experiment.

In addition to the above Prof. Dr. Cankoçak stated that CERN stands for French Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, a provisional body founded in 1952 with the mandate of establishing a world-class fundamental physics research organization in Europe. He said: “Currently CERN has 21 full members with 2 candidate for full membership; and Turkey also has three associate members, which are included. Approximately 3000 researchers are active in this center. The majority of the work is carried out by physicists and support staff and engineers contribute to the work. In addition, around 10000 physicists and engineers around the world are participating in these studies, alternately and sometimes remotely.”

He explained the aims of CERN experiments…
Prof. Dr. Cankoçak stated that to enable physicists from all over the world to communicate with each other, Tim Berners-Lee, a contractor at CERN, discovered Hypertext Markup Language HTML, which is a standard markup language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser. Then from this, World Wide Web (www) was developed to offer computer communication all over the world.

Prof. Dr. Kerem Cankoçak stated that the main aim of the studies at CERN is to establish the theoretical physics findings in an experimental environment and the most important experiment being studied is the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) experiment. Moreover, he said that the aim of this experiment is to investigate the conditions of the Big Bang Theory. These studies have recently discovered W and Z disturbances, atomic symmetries and a boson that resembles the Higgs boson.

Academics Open a Door for Research at CERN …
It was pointed out that participation to the seminar was quite intense and the Q & A section interested many; such that Prof. Dr. Kerem Cankoçak discussed the answers related to the questions asked. He also shared important information about possible future researches and studies at CERN with the Near East University. In other words, he provided details regarding opportunities for Near East University researchers to take part in CERN research.

Published scientific articles and books…
It was said that after working at CERN for many years, Prof. Dr. Kerem Cankoçak is continuing to conduct research as an academic member of the Department of Physics of Istanbul Technical University. He has published numerous scientific articles on particle physics, in addition to popular science articles published in various journals. Furthermore, he edited numerous popular science books. Prof. Dr. Cankoçak wrote the books titled as ‘‘CERN’’ and “50 Questions on the Evolution of Matter after the Big Bang”.
