A Rare Cancer Type; Tonsil Tumour Surgery was carried out at the Near East University Hospital

- Caution about enlarged tonsils!
Making a statement, Head of Department of Otorhinolaryngology of Near East University Hospital, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Asım Şafak, expressed that in cases where tonsil infections do not respond to treatment or when there is a difference of size between the tonsils (a later enlargement), the tumours should be considered with care.

According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations, very recently an elderly male patient arrived to Near East University Hospital with difficulty in swallowing and pain due to tonsil infection. Subsequent to medical examination, an antibiotic treatment was administered to which there was no response to the treatment. Then, as a result of the pathological examination, the patient was diagnosed with tonsil cancer. A surgery which lasted about 12 hours was conducted at which the cancer tissues around the neck area, the region around the tonsils, at the base of the tongue, laryngeal and oesophagus region was removed. 11 days after the operation, the patient was discharged as he returned back to normal nutrition via the mouth. The patient’s status was jointly evaluated by the Near East University Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Department of Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology, and as a result, a radiotherapy and chemotherapy was planned for the patient.

It was proudly expressed that the above mentioned surgery, a rare tonsil cancer, was the first of its kind to be conducted in Northern Cyprus; at the Near East University Hospital.
