Young Doctors’ Pride Day… Near East University Faculty of Medicine Graduates Received Their Diplomas After Swearing the Hippocratic Oath…

Near East University Faculty of Medicine feels great honor and pride of raising well-equipped professionals having the broad range of information and skills required to fulfill the vital role of physicians.

2018-2019 Academic Year Spring Term graduates of Near East University Faculty of Medicine received their diplomas with a glorious ceremony held at the Grand Hall of Atatürk Culture and Congress Center.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University, the graduation ceremony was realized with the participation of Zorlu Töre, the Deputy Chair of TRNC Assembly, University of Kyrenia Rector Professor Ilkay Salihoğlu, NEU vice Rector Professor Tamer Şanlıdag, NEU vice Rector Associate Professor Mustafa Kurt, Professor Nail Bulakbaşı, Chief Physician of Dr. Suat Günsel Hospital of University of Kyrenia, Professor Gamze Mocan, Founding Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Near East University, Emeritus Professor Vamık Volkan, EMU Faculty of Medicine Dean Professor Nahide Gökçora, deans, department chairpersons, faculty members, students and their parents.

The graduation ceremony began with a moment of silence for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Turkish Cypriot leader Dr. Fazıl Küçük, TRNC Founding President Rauf R. Denktaş and all martyrs and followed by national anthem. Then, the music recital performed by Ilyas Abdullin and Gözdem Ilkay from the Music Teaching Department of Atatürk Faculty of Education received great admiration.

The opening remarks of the graduation ceremony were delivered respectively by Professor Songül Vaizoğlu, Professor Tamer Şanlıdağ and Zorlu Töre.

Prof. Dr. Songül Vaizoğlu: "Medicine is the art of lifelong learning and application of what learnt in an accurate and ethic manner..."
In her opening remarks, Professor Songül Vaizoğlu underlined the importance of medicine and said: "Medicine is not only about diagnosis and treatment. It is also the art of lifelong learning and application of what learnt in an accurate and ethic manner. Training and learning continue lifelong in medicine. Medical science needs altruism. It is an arduous and long termed process. Those who set foot on this road will be going on their way as go-getter persons without boredom and reluctance. Medical science is in a constant development as a result of scientific research and technological advances regarding medicine. Therefore, lifelong learning is the key to ensuring that doctors keep their professional knowledge up to date and benefit from the latest treatment techniques in order to offer safer and the most effective treatment options for their patients without compromising professional ethics. Throughout your education you have been equipped with the most up-to date comprehensive knowledge, skills and practice and now you are ready to begin your career as competent physicians who are able to take the advantage of the new technologies to provide early and accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. You are good physicians capable of utilizing new technologies and updating yourselves” noted she.

Underlining the significant role of communication skills, especially in the doctor-patient relationship, Professor Vaizoğlu went on her remarks: "In order to achieve success in your career, you should be competent in all areas of your practice. However, competence is more than just medical skills and knowledge; it also comprises practicing safely and effectively. The doctor-patient relationship is the foundation of the practice of medicine. You will be successful physicians, if you love people and reflect your patience, compassion, altruism, trustworthiness in your services, and feel happy with every patient that you restore his/her health. It is a nice but arduous profession. Internalizing concepts such as empathy, stress and anger control, patience and understanding will provide a great contribution not only to your professional success and your career but also to your happiness and your peace”.

Underlining the necessity of providing healthcare services fairly, indiscriminately and equally regardless of gender, language, religion, race, discord and economic differences, Professor Vaizoğlu said that the guidance of science and universal medical ethics should be the compass of medical practices.

Addressing the parents, Professor Vaizoğlu expressed her feelings: “Dear parents, undoubtedly you did everything and provided all kind of support for your beloved ones. You entrusted your children to us during their university education. Be sure that we educated them in the best way. As Near East University, we have no doubt that they are well equipped with up-to-date information and professional skills and ethics to make impact in their fields. You are here today with high feelings. You are experiencing the right proud of witnessing your children receiving their diplomas. We share the same excitement and pride with you. Don't have any doubt; Near East University has raised these young people well. Be sure of their future success and trust them, be proud of them”.

Professor Vaizoğlu ended her remarks by extending her appreciations to NEU Founding Rector Dr. Suat Günsel, NEU Board of Trustees Chairman Associate Professor Irfan Günsel, members of NEU Board of Trustees, Near East University Administration, and NEU Hospital Administration in recognition of their support throughout this arduous process. “I would also like to take this opportunity and express my gratitude to my colleagues for their devoted efforts to raise such well-equipped physicians”.


Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ: "We Raise Individuals and Researchers Who Have the Ability to Apply Contemporary Teaching Methods and Who are Competent in Their Fields..."
In his opening remarks, NEU vice Rector Tamer Şanlıdağ delivered information regarding educational objectives of Near East University:
"With her gigantic steps towards being a 4th generation university, Near East University aims to transform all scientific data obtained through academic studies, research and R & D activities for the benefit of society. Near East University has undertaken it as mission to offer quality education beyond the standards set by national and international bodies and raise individuals and researchers who are capable to shape the future. Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ: "A doctor of medicine is an absolute person..."
“A medical doctor is not just a person who is qualified to practice medicine or specialized in diagnosis and medical treatment, a medical doctor also is a person, who seeks wisdom and is determined to work wisdom, who is not limited to the knowledge being taught to him/her, who is capable of distinguishing "right" from "wrong" in the profession of medicine, and who has the capacity to develop an understanding of not repeating the wrongdoings of his/her teachers and predecessors. A doctor of medicine is an absolute person.

From now on, you are medical doctors. A doctor is the person, who never departs from the awareness that the patient is a "human" and who has the mental and intellectual equipment to achieve a significant improvement in both his/her own life and the quality of life of the patient. You are ready to assume roles and responsibilities in various domains of medicine to promote and contribute to both public health and community-based educational approaches. Wherever you go, you will take active roles in medical field and represent our faculty as competent, keen and researcher physicians. While you feel pride of your faculty, which is an internationally esteemed destination of contemporary education and science, we will also be proud of you. I wish all of you success and good luck on this long and challenging way" noted he.

Zorlu Töre: "Even you are graduated, lifelong learning will continue..."
Zorlu Töre, the Deputy Chair of TRNC Assembly, stated that medical doctors were very esteemed persons in the society adding that it was a profession that required lifelong learning.

"You will be an honorary ambassador of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus wherever you go. You will never forget Dr. Suat Günsel and his family who have been working devotedly to promote our country across the globe. You are graduating from a university that provided the greatest contribution to the success stories of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the field of education, science, health, innovation, art and culture. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is proud of its universities. However, Near East University has a distinguished place. The Faculty of Medicine of Near East University is the educational ground of many successful physicians. You will be proud of your faculty and university, while we will be proud of your achievements. I wish you all continued success and good luck" noted he.

Following the opening remarks, under the helm of the vice Dean Professor Songül Vaizoğlu, the graduates took the Hippocratic Oath. Then, NEU vice Rector Professor Tamer Şanlıdağ decorated medals and awarded their diplomas to the top scoring students. Before diploma presentation, the top ranking graduate of Near East University Faculty of Medicine, Amira Asiya Belgore nailed her engraved name plaque on log. Then, the diplomas were delivered.
