While women’s rights and social equality are more important than ever today, Near East University, one of the world’s top 500 universities, will be a voice for women with the event “Being a Woman: Our Story” on Monday, March 9th at 2 PM at the Near East University Atatürk Culture and Congress Center.
On “March 8th International Women’s Day,” which symbolizes women’s struggle for equality, labor, and rights, a shared space for reflection is created each year by refreshing social memory. Within the scope of this special day, Near East University, one of the world’s top 500 universities, is hosting an event to raise awareness about women’s social role and equality.
The event, titled “Being a Woman: Our Story,” organized by the Near East University Gender Research and Application Center (TOCAM) and the Atatürkist Thought Development Club, will be held free of charge on Monday, March 9th at 2 PM at the Near East University Atatürk Culture and Congress Center.
The event will be moderated by Assist. Prof. Dr. Tijen Zeybek, a faculty member at the Near East University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. Speakers will include Hazar Topal, Psychologist at the TRNC Central Prison; Ömür Yılmaz, Coordinator of the Nicosia Turkish Municipality Shelter; Prof. Dr. Özen Aşut, Faculty Member of the Public Health Department at the Near East University Faculty of Medicine; and Prof. Dr. Nur Köprülü, Head of the Political Science Department at the Near East University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences.
The event, which will bring together academic knowledge and field experience, will address how being a woman is experienced in different social spheres from the perspectives of rights, equality, health, psychology, and local governments. The event aims to discuss the problems faced by women from a multifaceted perspective and to create a common area of awareness.

Prof. Dr. Ayça Demet Atay, Head of the Gender Research and Application Center, said, “With our event, we aim to address the various dimensions of being a woman from academic and social perspectives and to raise awareness.” Emphasizing that women’s rights and equality are more important than ever today, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayça Demet Atay said, “Gender equality is a value benefited by not only women but the entire society. In this event, we aim to provide a multifaceted discussion environment on rights and equality.”
