As the institutions, which provide the education, the assessment and certification of the seafarers, are subjected to the inspections regarding the standards set by the respective convention and regulations for seafarers, the University of Kyrenia Faculty of Maritime Studies is subjected to inspections conducted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and TR Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs. With two million lira investment in new laboratories and new generation maritime simulators, the University of Kyrenia Faculty of Maritime Studies, which is the first and only maritime faculty of TRNC, has achieved the ultimate level of the maritime training criteria set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs of the Republic of Turkey.

2 million additional investment in new generation maritime training laboratories and simulators...

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press & Public Relations Office of the University of Kyrenia, the Faculty of Maritime Studies has steered the wheel towards becoming a pioneer in creating maritime values and standards of the future by providing quality education in all domains of maritime with an innovative approach exceeding the international minimum standards. It was stated that the additional investment in new generation laboratories and simulators should be considered as a step taken towards within the frame of these big objectives. This significant investment has paved the way for the University of Kyrenia to undertake a leading role in carrying the higher maritime education in the region to more advanced levels.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set out certain standards amending the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Requirements regarding the carrying of suitable Automated Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA), Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS), and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) are stipulated in international conventions. According to 2010 Manila amendments on the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention), all masters and deck officers employed on board ships navigating in international waters are required to be trained on the use of these equipments. In order to provide the highest quality maritime education and training in compliance with international standards set under convention and regulations by IMO, the University of Kyrenia got in touch with international manufacturers and purchased the new generation lab instruments and simulators that met the standard requirements of IMO and maritime training requirements set by 2010 Manila Amendments. The new generation maritime simulators purchased by the University of Kyrenia are compatible with each other and comprise the Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA) simulation laboratory, which provides the students with opportunities to gain information on radar plotting and collision avoidance through hands-on applications to calculate the tracked object's course, speed and closest point of approach (CPA), and time to the closest point of approach (TCPA), Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS) simulator to provide training on continuous position and navigational safety information, Bridge simulator, which is a cutting-edge technology platform enabling more realistic training scenarios, Engine room simulator, which is a highly realistic training tool for achieving optimum engine control and handling emergencies and abnormal situations that might occur, Liquid cargo handling simulator to provide high quality training in every aspect, from details in a single sub-system to the overall running of a loading or discharge operation, including handling of emergency situations, and GMDSS Radio and Communication simulation lab, which is capable to fulfill all requirements of Global Maritime Distress and Safety system (GMDSS). All of the new generation maritime training simulators purchased by the University of Kyrenia are certified and fully compliant with STCW's latest requirements for training purposes.

The University of Kyrenia Faculty of Maritime Studies with its new laboratories equipped with cutting-edge technology and highly realistic training tools and the new generation maritime training simulators will move the maritime higher education in Cyprus beyond the international standards. Underlining that the Faculty of Maritime Studies provides high standard quality education in compliance with standards based on the requirements defined by 1978 International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW-1978) as amended in 1995 (STCW-95) and 2010 Manila amendments, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Altunç attached special emphasis on the crucial role of such giant investments in enhancing the quality of education.
