Near East Yeniboğaziçi College 7th year students visited the Walled City Museum located at the Kyrenia Gate in Nicosia. The students, who toured the museum accompanied by their teachers, examined the ceiling paintings depicting the historical past of Cyprus, its cultural richness and important historical events on the island.

In the museum where works from different styles and periods are exhibited on each floor, over 70 sculptures, paintings, objects related to maritime history and Karagöz figures are among the other noteworthy collections. The students, who toured all around the museum with curiosity, had the opportunity to see clothes, models and many historical objects from different periods together. The works from the Ottoman period were among the most striking parts of the trip. The students embarked on a journey of history with the orders and decrees bearing the traces of the period, the kadi (governor) registers belonging to Nicosia and carpets from the 17th century.

From the past to the present, from the present to the future…

Students who showed great interest in musicians who have become symbols of Turkish Cypriot culture took souvenir photos next to the hyperrealistic silicone sculptures of Turkish Cypriot community leader Dr. Fazıl Küçük and his comrades Rauf Raif Denktaş and Osman Örek. One of the most popular works in the Walled City Museum, which conveys the events that left deep marks in the memory of the Turkish Cypriot community to future generations, was the oil painting that commemorates the “Champion Angels” who lost their lives at the ISAS Hotel.
