The newly designed cord clamp, produced in cooperation with the Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Midwifery and NEU3D Laboratory, has a much more ergonomic design, suitable for the wishes of parents and healthcare professionals, compared to the umbilical cord clamps used since the 1960s.
The umbilical cord is a vital bridge that allows the baby to be fed through the placenta while in the womb. This cord, which contains the blood vessels that carry the necessary oxygen and nutrients to the baby, is clamped 2-3 centimeters above the abdominal wall after birth and separated from the placenta. The clamps used in this process, which must be done in a hygienic environment and with sterile cutting tools, are still produced in accordance with the design patented in the 1960s. However, the current design used in umbilical cord clamps can cause problems for parents and healthcare workers due to their very large size. Trying to wrap the clamp with a cloth so that it does not harm the baby’s abdomen, and due to its length, the baby gets stuck during dressing and undressing and sometimes breaks off from the abdominal wall.

Near East University researchers designed a much more ergonomic clamp in order to reduce the complaints of parents and healthcare professionals. The smaller-sized and ergonomic Cord Clamp, developed with the collaboration of Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences Deputy Dean and Midwifery Department Lecturer Assist. Prof. Dr. Betül Mammadov, Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital Pediatric Surgery Department Pediatric Surgeon Assoc. Prof. Emil Mammadov, and Mechanical Engineer Ersin Aytaç, one of the NEU3D Laboratory staff, was registered as a “Utility Model” by the Turkish Patent Institute on behalf of the Near East University. A utility model is given to protect the property rights of inventions that create a previously unknown product or improve the existing product.

Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ: “We continue to make new inventions and developments in the field of health by combining our application opportunities with our R&D and product development capabilities.”
Reminding that Near East University has two medical faculties hospitals, a dental hospital and an animal hospital, and a health network equipped with the latest technology spread throughout the TRNC, Near East University Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said, “We continue to make new inventions and developments in the field of health by combining our application opportunities with our R&D and product development capabilities.”

Reminding that they recently obtained a patent for the biosensor they developed to detect Helicobacter pylori bacteria, which can cause many stomach diseases, especially cancer, ulcer and gastritis, Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ said, “These multidisciplinary studies that are carried out by our academicians who specialize in different fields, also turn into products that will facilitate human life. We will continue to develop new products that bring together the competence of the Near East University, especially in the fields of health and engineering.”

Assist. Prof. Dr. Betül Mammadov: “Our new design clamps are more ergonomic than traditional clamps. They offer a much more comfortable use for parents, newborns and healthcare professionals.”
Making a statement about the new design umbilical cord clamps they developed, Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences Deputy Dean and Midwifery Department Faculty Member Assist. Prof. Dr. Betül Mammadov said, “Our new design clamps are more ergonomic than traditional clamps. They offer a much more comfortable use for parents, newborns and healthcare workers.

“Traditional umbilical cord clamps consist of two legs about 6 centimeters long and 4.5 millimeters thick with a fine-toothed clamping surface. The size of the existing clamps and the difficulties in use they cause increase the stress experienced by the parents after the birth,” saying Assist. Prof. Dr. Mammadov added that the new design clamps will eliminate many problems and provide a more comfortable use for everyone.
