An endemic anise species discovered in Turkey was included in the literature with the name of Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Can Başer, Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy at Near East University Faculty of Pharmacy. Prof. Dr. Başer’s name was given to a newly discovered plant in Turkey for the fifth time.
The name of Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer, Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy at Near East University Faculty of Pharmacy, known for his scientific studies in the field of medicinal and aromatic plants, was given to an endemic plant species newly introduced to the flora of Turkey. This new anise species, discovered in Konya and belonging to the parsley family (Apiaceae), was included in the literature in the scientific world as “Pimpinella husnucan-baseri, Can Anise”. The discovery of the plant was announced to the public on May 22, World Biodiversity Day. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Duran, who introduced the new species to the scientific world, dedicated the anise species to Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Can Başer, who is highly respected scientist in the TRNC, Turkey and the world for his scientific contributions. With this naming, Prof. Dr. Başer’s name was given to a plant species in the Turkish flora for the fifth time.

The potential of the new endemic species as a raw material for medicine will be investigated!
The “Can anise”, which grows in a narrow area in the Hadim district of Konya, is in danger of extinction due to its natural habitat being surrounded by settlements and agricultural areas. This situation makes the plant one of the endemic species in Turkey that needs to be protected as a priority. This endangered endemic species will also be the subject of scientific research as a raw material for medicine, thanks to its medicinal and aromatic properties.

He has written its name on nature: Five plant species have been named after him!
With the new discovery, the name of Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer, Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Near East University, was given to a plant species for the fifth time. The name of Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Can Başer, who came to the fore with his scientific contributions to pharmaceutical sciences and botany, thus gained an important place in the flora of Turkey. One of these species was; “Başer Lohusaotu (Aristolochia baseri)”, while the other was “Hüsnü Can Başer Thyme (Origanum husnucan-baseri)”, which directly bears the name of Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Can Başer. “Başer Cornflower (Centaurea baseri)” and “Başer Rock Thyme (Thymus baseri)”, which grows in rocky areas, were also included in this list. Finally; one of the anise species was named “Can Anise (Pimpinella husnucan-baseri)”.

An academic career crowned with awards…
Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer, known in the international scientific community for his work in the fields of pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, botany and ethnopharmacology, continues to transfer his knowledge to his students at the Near East University Faculty of Pharmacy.
