The largest hall of the Grand Library named Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan Republic Hall with the decision of Günsel Family Board

With the decision of the Günsel Family Board, the largest hall of the Near East University Grand Library, which serves the people of TRNC with its millions of information resources, services, and fully equipped building, was named Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan Republic Hall. Serving as the Rector of Near East University since 2000, Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan has an important place in the scientific world as one of our important historians.

Believing that the basis of development is knowledge, Near East University Grand Library has more than 2 million 250 thousand books. With more than 60 thousand electronic magazines and 650 million electronic resources from all over the world, the Grand Library has 10,500 DVDs, 17 movie viewing booths, 12 individual and group study rooms, 4 amphitheaters, a 350-seat theater, and a 1,000-person work desk.

Near East University Grand Library hosts the most valuable information treasure of our country in number and variety of resources, in type and number of users as well as in types of services it offers. The Grand Library, which hosts science, culture and art activities at its halls, serves not only the Near East University students but also the people of the TRNC.

The Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan Republic Hall, named after Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan completing his 20th year as the Rector of Near East University and standing out as one of our important scientists, is the largest and equipped hall of Near East University Grand Library.

Who is Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan?
Born in Istanbul in 1943, Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan worked for Ziraat Bank for four years after graduating from Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences. His doctoral field is "Public Law and State Theories". Prof. Dr. Hassan gave lectures on Public Law and State Theories, History of Islam and Turkish Intellectual, Ottoman Economic-Social-Political Structure, and History of Political Thought at Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences between 1969-1984. He gave lectures on State Theories, Sources in the History of Islam and Turkish Thought, and Contemporary Doctrines at the doctoral level. In 1985, he received the Sedat Simavî Social Sciences Award.

Between 1985-1992, he taught History of Civilization, Ottoman Economic-Social-Political Structure, Political Anthropology, History of Islam and Turkish Thought, Foundations of the Social and Legal Structure of Europe at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences, European Community Center. He gave lectures at doctoral programs on Philosophical Foundations of Political Theories, State Theories, Sources in Islam and Turkish History, and Turkish Intellectual History in the 19th and 20th Centuries. He wrote many chapters of Ana Britannica (starting from the letter 'K') on the history of the Turks.

He has been working at Near East University in Cyprus since 1993. As an academician of Near East University, he gave undergraduate and postgraduate lectures on Ottoman Social-Political-Legal Structure, Legal History, Foundations of Turkish Foreign Policy, Social-Political Structure in Turkish Novel in Near East University, Post-Constitutional Turkish Poetry, History of Sports. He has been the Rector of Near East University since 2000.

He has published books and articles on the history of Turks, Islamic Thought, State Theories, and Political Anthropology.
