The Graduation Ceremony of Near East University Faculty of Medicine was realised with a high number of participation

Near East University Faculty of Medicine 2016-2017 Academic Year graduates, 35 undergraduate and 5 postgraduates, received their diplomas from his Excellency the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mustafa Akıncı.

According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the graduation ceremony was held at the Near East University Atatürk Culture and Congress Centre. Furthermore, the protocol of the ceremony included the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mustafa Akıncı, Chairperson of the Parliament Dr. Sibel Siber, TRNC Minister of Health Dr.Faiz Sucuoğlu, Head of Higher Education Planning, Accrediting and Coordination Board (YÖDAK) Prof. Dr. Akile Büke, The Founding Rector of the Near East University Dr. Suat İ.Günsel, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East University Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S.Günsel, Vice Rectors, Deans, Academicians and Students of Near East University; and Guests.

Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan; “The families of students who undertake their medical education should be saluted and respected!”

The opening speech of the graduation ceremony was done by Near East University Rector, Prof. Dr Ümit Hassan, who emphasised the role the families play in students’ lives who undertake their medical education. Prof. Dr Ümit Hassan emphasised the significance of professions related to the field of medicine and stated that these individuals created a distinguished community; since their work was related to high commitments, good will and perseverance. In his speech he also provided details of the etymological background of the word “hekim (medical attendant)” and stressed that the word was related to “person responsible to know everything”. He ended his words by wishing all the graduates the best of luck in their future careers.

Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan; “Near East University Faculty of Medicine has taken its position among the worldly renown Faculties of Medicine!…”

Founding Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Near East University Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan also made a speech at the ceremony and stated that the Faculty was founded in 2008, and that this was the 4th term that graduates of the Faculty. She added that the graduates had gained the right to participate in speciality examinations abroad. Furthermore, she stated that being a doctor was not limited to diagnosing and providing treatment but that it involved continuous work and efforts to develop and learn. She addressed the graduates as her “colleagues” and stated that she was sure they would continue to make the Near East University proud with achieving further success in their lives.

Head of YÖDAK Akile Büke; “I am very honoured to be participating to a graduation ceremony of a Faculty of Medicine in our own country!”

Head of Higher Education Planning, Accrediting and Coordination Board (YÖDAK) Prof. Dr. Akile Büke stated that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was now known as the location of universities and that she was very proud to be at a graduation ceremony of a faculty of medicine on the island. She stressed that she shared the pride and joy of the academicians of the NEU Faculty of Medicine since there were academicians at the Faculty who had also taught herself. She expressed many thanks and emphasised that this was only a beginning and that the graduates of today needed to continue to study and improve their knowledge and skills in the future.

Minister of Health Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu: “Medical Education does not end and continues throughout one’s life!”

Also making a speech, the Minister of Health Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu stressed that the graduates were taking their first steps in their career lives and that they needed to pursue their medical education throughout their lives since medical education never ended. He further stated that their Hippocratic Oath would be guiding them throughout.

Chairperson of the Parliament Dr. Sibel Siber: “I believe that the reason why there is so much demand to the profession of doctor was due to the pride and moral satisfaction this profession gave to oneself!”

Dr Sibel Siber began her words by congratulating the graduates and expressed her opinion on why there was a high demand to becoming a doctor by stating that this profession provided pride and moral satisfaction to oneself. She ended her words by wishing best of luck to the graduates in their future lives.

His Excellency the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mustafa Akıncı: “The utmost need of a patient from a doctor is the feeling of TRUST!”

The final speech of the ceremony was done by the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mustafa Akıncı, where he stated that the utmost feature that a doctor must have is to be a trustworthy person; gaining the trust of his/her patients. He emphasised his belief on becoming a trustworthy doctor in their career lives and wished the graduates much success to be achieved in the future. He reminded the graduates that currently there were 17-18 doctor parliamentarians in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Parliament and pointed out that doctors were keen on taking part in politics. He referenced Minister of Health; Dr Faiz Sucuoğlu’s words “do your own jobs!” He reminded the graduates that being a doctor was toilsome and therefore required them to be willing to do hard work.

President Akıncı; “I have observed that the Founding Rector of Near East University, Dr. Suat Günsel, by realising his envisions regarding significant centres.”

President Akıncı continued his speech by emphasising that the Founding Rector of the Near East University Dr. Suat Günsel realised his envisions of important centres such as Atatürk Culture and Congress Centre and NEU Grand Library and it was rather significant to try to provide the needs of the community being lived in.

It was pointed out that subsequent to the above mentioned speeches the graduates said the Hippocratic Oath and the first three of the Faculty of Medicine; Department First Dr. Nur Bazırbaşi, second Dr. Sarah Dabbaz, and third Dr. Nur Alshanableh were initially given their diplomas.
