Asst. Prof. Dr. Kalbim Arslan: "Patients considering surgical treatment for obesity are evaluated with a multidisciplinary approach..."
Highlighting the necessity of a thorough assessment of the patient before deciding for a surgical procedure, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kalbim Arslan delivered information about the pre-operative procedure: "When a patient considering weight loss surgery apply to our clinic, we do not make an operation decision immediately without evaluating the patient's condition through a multidisciplinary approach. First of all, we evaluate our patients with a multidisciplinary team consisting of medical doctors from endocrine and psychiatric departments and from nutrition and dietetic center. The history of the patients' weight level, any weight loss efforts, and their eating and exercise habits are evaluated thoroughly. While the hormonal causes underlying obesity are being investigated by our endocrine specialist, our nutrition and dietetic experts evaluate the compliance of the patient with the diet programs he had taken before and the success of these programs. Our psychiatrists examine whether there is an underlying tension and eating disorder due to the patient's mental state. Grounding on the results acquired through the medical assessment, our medical team tailors the most appropriate treatment including surgery for the patient suffering from obesity”.

British Patient Returned to Her Country by Losing 10 Kilos in 10 Days...
In order to reduce the size of the stomach and the secretion of appetite regulating hormone, the British patient had undergone a successful weight-loss surgery (bariatric surgery). The tube stomach operation that carried out under the helm of Assistant Professor Kalbim Arslan with the participation of Prof. Dr. Hakan Erpek and Prof. Dr. Necdet Özçay lasted approximately two hours. Underlining that weight-loss surgery is most successful when used as part of a long-term healthy lifestyle change, including diet and exercise, Asst. Prof. Dr. Arslan states that they have performed a very successful tube stomach surgery and the British patient was discharged following the observation process. "After surgery, the patient returned her country by losing 10 kilos in 10 days.  The patient will come to our country two months later for control examination. We aim to restore her ideal weight in a short time through a patient-tailored lifestyle change program including diet and exercise. Ideal weight can be maintained over many years with a long-term healthy lifestyle change" noted he.

Weight-loss process stops in patients reaching ideal weight after obesity surgery...
Highlighting that after surgery, weight loss is often rapid, and then it begins to slow down over the next two years, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kalbim Arslan states that the weight-loss in patients, who adopt a healthy diet program, and calorie intake in daily normal limits, stops upon reaching the ideal weight.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Kalbim Arslan: "The main purpose of obesity operations is to eliminate the health problems of the patients. Aesthetic concerns are of secondary importance. ”
Highlighting the importance of an appropriate healthy diet program in patients undergone obesity surgery due to the reduced stomach, Assistant Professor Kalbim Arslan states that the calorie intake of the patient should be carefully planned and spread throughout the day.

“Reducing the size of stomach via weight-loss surgery leads reduction in the secretion of appetite regulating hormone. Thus, this lessens the desire to eat. The obese patients, who used to eat too much, begin to eat less after surgery as they don't feel hunger. Consequently, the patients do not want to eat much due to the lessening in the appetite hormone. This group of patients, who normally consume excessive food, becomes unwilling to eat after surgery. Thus, a happy weight-loss process begins. On the other hand, we have to remember that the main purpose of weight loss surgeries is to eliminate the health problems of the patients; aesthetic concerns are of secondary importance" said he.
