The 1st International Cinema Symposium held by the Near East University Communication Research Center completed

Held by the Near East University Faculty of Communication and the Communication Research Center, the 1st International Cinema Symposium, titled “The Relations between Culture, Cinema and Culture in the Language of Cinema”, was concluded with a three-day intensive program including 14 sessions and 42 paper presentations. Within the scope of the symposium, an online photography exhibition consisting of 51 photographs was also held.

The 1st International Cinema Symposium attracted great attention
On the first day of the 1st International Cinema Symposium, a total of 11 papers were presented in 4 sessions under the main headings of the economic and cultural structure of cinema, re-understanding Yeşilçam cinema, the relations between cinema and space, and sound design in cinema. On the second day, under the main title of “Future Designer Cinema” moderated by Prof. Dr. Elif Asude Tunca, the session was carried out on ethical values, future designer science fiction cinema. Prof. Dr. Serdar Öztürk attracted great attention with his presentation titled “An Alternative Public Space in the Example of Coffee Shop Space in Turkish History: Affective Public Space”. In the other 4 sessions held later during the day, 15 papers were presented on the topics of social memory and cinema, culture created in horror cinema, and the view of women in cinema.


42 papers presented in 14 sessions
The 1st International Cinema Symposium housed discussions on many topics from different disciplines, with cinema at its centre. The first session of the day moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Güneyli, attracted great attention with the topic “Intercultural communication and language education”. The relations between cinema and other disciplines was examined under the titles of culture and society, culture and ideology, and interaction between arts, and it was emphasized how cinema acts as a bridge.

In the last session, the impact of Turkish TV series abroad and their contribution to intercultural communication were discussed. The symposium was concluded by presenting 16 papers in 6 sessions on the subject. Thus, 42 papers were presented in 14 sessions during the symposium.

43 photographers from 5 countries participated in the digital photography exhibition
Within the scope of the 1st International Cinema Symposium, the premiere of the online photography exhibition consisting of 51 photographs by 23 participants from 5 countries was also held. In the exhibition, photographs containing the concepts of culture, migration, people, life and family of the countries of the Turkish world were exhibited.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fevzi Kasap: “Artists and academics encouraged us to organize the symposium next year”
1st International Cinema Symposium Organizing Committee Chairman and Near East University Communication Faculty Radio, TV and Cinema Department Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fevzi Kasap stated that the number of symposiums that focus on cinema in the academic world is very few and that they aimed to partially fill this gap with the 1st International Cinema Symposium they organized. Stating that the symposium attracted great interest from artists and academics, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kasap said, “The artists and academicians encouraged us to organize the symposium next year. Some universities have also stated that they want to host the second symposium to be held next year.”
