Champions had a great time!
All project teams and academic advisors representing Near East University and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the TEKNOFEST finals were honored at the event held at the Cyprus Car Museum. The “Heavy Metal” team, which became the champion in the Agriculture Category of the Research Project Competition, received their awards from Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ersin Tatar. The project developed by Near East University students aims to detect heavy metals such as lead quickly and on-site with portable sensors in fields. Thanks to this innovative system based on electrochemical principles, soil and water quality can be analyzed instantly, increasing both productivity and food safety.
The project of the EcOceanX team, which won the Prestige Award in the Research Project Competition, envisions an innovative system that collects marine litter accumulated on coastlines and converts them into recycled energy and reusable materials. In addition, the fact that this system protects coastal ecosystems and contributes to biodiversity strengthens the environmental sustainability dimension of the project.
Another project of the Near East University, which represented the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the TEKNOFEST 2025 finals, was the MG-COP team’s project titled “Microbiota and Geochemistry of Copper Mine Wastes in Northern Cyprus”. The project, which competed in the “Environmental Research” category, aims to analyze the environmental effects of copper mine waste in the Lefke region with microbiological and geochemical methods and to discover new bacterial species that can be used in purifying these wastes. The “Sterile Vegetable” project offers a smart agricultural system specially developed for individuals with suppressed immune systems.
