The first event of 2024 within the scope of the “Periodic Conferences” series organized by the Near East University DESAM Research Institute was carried out by Sociologist and writer Prof. Dr. Besim Dellaloğlu. At the conference held at the Near East Hospital, Prof. Dr. Dellaloğlu discussed the topic “Studying Society: Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology and Cultural Studies”.

Sociologist and writer Prof. Dr. Besim Dellaloğlu, who participated in the “Periodic Conferences” series as an invited speaker, made a presentation focusing on the relations between cultural studies and established disciplines. Prof. Dr. Besim Dellaloğlu, in his presentation; looked from different perspectives at areas related to the complexity of society and the depths of human relations, which humanity has been thinking about and investigating for centuries.

The conference, which attracted great interest by academics and students, is open to all professional organizations, non-governmental organizations and the public. The conference, which was broadcast live on the official YouTube channel of Near East University, was moderated by Near East University Rector Advisor and Near East University DESAM Institute Board Member Prof. Dr. Murat Sayan.

Prof. Dr. Besim Dellaloğlu: “No culture can be compared to another culture”
Explaining how different disciplines in fields such as philosophy, sociology and anthropology interact with each other and how they complement each other in understanding society, Prof. Dr. Besim Dellaloğlu emphasized that these enrich cultural studies. Stating that cultural studies are at the point where the boundaries of sociology and anthropology cannot be determined, Prof. Dr. Dellaloğlu emphasized that the main purpose of cultural studies is to reduce the distinction between anthropology and sociology. Prof. Dr. Besim Dellaloğlu said, “No culture can be compared to another culture. Thus, cultures cannot be compared.”

Prof. Dr. Who is Besim Dellaloğlu?
One of Turkey’s important sociologists, Prof. Dr. Besim Dellaloğlu, after graduating from Boğaziçi University, Department of Political Science and International Relations, completed his doctorate on sociology at Mimar Sinan University. He also worked as a French tourist guide for a long time during his undergraduate and graduate education. After completing his doctorate, Dellaloğlu conducted various research and gave lectures at many universities abroad. He is currently giving lectures at Mimar Sinan, Marmara, İstanbul Bilgi, Yıldız Teknik, Galatasaray, Kırklareli, İstanbul and Sakarya universities in Turkey.
