The concept of multicultural education in preschool education was discussed in all its aspects throughout a seminar held at Near East University. The prospective teachers were introduced to inclusive approaches and examples of practices aimed at supporting classroom interactions between children from various cultural backgrounds.
The seminar, titled “Multicultural Education and Classroom Interaction of Children in Preschool Education,” was organized in collaboration with the Department of Preschool Education, Office of Student’s Dean, and the Preschool Education Club of the Atatürk Faculty of Education at Near East University. Child Development Specialist and Family Counselor İdil Şengöz Tosun participated as a speaker. The seminar addressed the importance of a multicultural education approach in preschool education, the interaction processes of children from various cultural backgrounds in the classroom, and the inclusive role of the teacher. İdil Şengöz Tosun presented examples of the positive effects of culturally diverse educational environments on children’s social-emotional development, empathy skills, and peer relationships in early childhood.
The seminar was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dervişe Amca Toklu, Head of the Department of Preschool Education and Advisor to the Preschool Education Club. The event highlighted the importance of multicultural approaches in education, offering participants opportunities for interactive discussion and experience sharing. The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, during which Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dervişe Amca Toklu presented İdil Şengöz Tosun with a certificate of appreciation.
Suggestions to guide teachers were shared!
The seminar also touched upon practices aimed at strengthening child interactions in the classroom and suggestions to guide teachers on topics such as a sense of belonging, respect for differences, communication skills, and creating a positive classroom climate were shared. The event also addressed situations that may be encountered in multicultural classroom environments, solutions, and the teacher’s role as a guide. Furthermore, the role of family participation in the multicultural education process was emphasized, and the contribution of school-family cooperation to the development of children’s cultural awareness was highlighted. The seminar contributed to strengthening the professional skills of prospective teachers and enriching their perspectives on culturally sensitive educational practices.

In her opening speech, moderator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dervişe Amca Toklu emphasized the need for teachers and parents to be aware of multiculturalism. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dervişe Amca Toklu stated that when adults adopt a conscious approach, children also develop positive behaviors in this direction. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Toklu noted that a multicultural approach in preschool education forms the foundation not only of academic achievement but also of social harmony and a culture of peace, and stated that such events make significant contributions to the professional development of prospective teachers.
