Scientists from Turkey and Cyprus Gather at Near East University

The 2nd National Sexuality and Sexual Health Symposium, held with the participation of expert academics, physicians, and healthcare professionals from Turkey and the TRNC, was held at the Near East University Irfan Günsel Congress Center.
Held by the Sexual Health Services Unit of the Near East University Dean of Students Office, the 2nd National Sexuality and Sexual Health Symposium was carried out at the Near East University Irfan Günsel Congress Center. The all-day symposium brought together academics, physicians, and healthcare professionals from Turkey and the TRNC who are experts in sexuality and sexual health.

The symposium was chaired by Prof. Dr. Dudu Özkum Yavuz, Dean of Students at Near East University, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilek Sarpkaya Güder, a faculty member at the Department of Obstetrics and Women’s Health Nursing at the Near East University Faculty of Nursing and Head of the Sexual Health Services Unit. The day-long symposium was open to the public and free of charge.

The symposium, which consisted of three sessions, presented a broad perspective, ranging from sexual health education and sexual dysfunctions to women’s and men’s health and sexuality issues related to psychiatric and urological diseases. The roles of healthcare professionals in protecting and promoting sexual health were also thoroughly evaluated. The opening speeches of the symposium was delivered by Near East University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Umut Aksoy and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilek Sarpkaya Güder.

A health perspective suitable for all ages was discussed…
The first session of the symposium addressed “Sexuality and Sexual Health in Adulthood,” chaired by Prof. Dr. Müfit Cemal Yenen, Specialist at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Kyrenia University Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at Near East University. The session included a presentation on “Sexuality and Sexual Health in Pregnancy” by Prof. Dr. Gül Ertem from Ege University, and a presentation on “Sexuality and Sexual Health during Pregnancy” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Member Sema Üstgörül; a presentation titled “Sexuality and Sexual Health in Childbirth and the Postpartum Period,” was made by Dr. Sema Üstgörül from Manisa Celal Bayar University, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmet Gün from Near East University Hospital presented “Sexuality and Sexual Health during Menopause and Andropause.”

The second session of the symposium was titled “Protecting and Improving Sexual Health in Adulthood.” Sessions were chaired by Prof. Dr. Adile Öniz Özgören, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Near East University, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tijen Ataçağ from Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital. In this section, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meryem Karaaziz, Faculty Member of the Department of Psychology at Near East University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, presented “Healthy Romantic Relationships, Psychological Resilience, and Sexual Well-Being”; Dr. Batuhan Dericioğlu from Cyprus International University presented “Exercise and Sexual Well-Being”; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nezire İnce and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilek Sarpkaya, Head of the Sexual Health Services Unit at Near East University, gave presentations on “Sex Education and Sexual Well-Being.”

The third and final session addressed the theme of “Protection and Promotion of Sexual Health in Adulthood 2.” The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Özen Aşut from the Near East University Faculty of Medicine and Assist. Prof. Dr. Özlem Akalpler from the Near East University Hospital. In this session, Prof. Dr. Ayten Şentürk Erenel from Gazi University and Prof. Dr. Şanda Çalı from the Near East University Faculty of Medicine provided information to the participants with their presentations titled “Protection from Sexually Transmitted Infections.” The different dimensions of sexuality and sexual health in adulthood were comprehensively evaluated from scientific perspectives in all three sessions of the symposium.
