Near East University Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gökçekuş and Assist. Prof. Dr. Youssef Kassem paid a visit to Minister of Economy and Energy Hasan Taçoy and made a presentation about the global climate change, importance of renewable energy sources in the 21st century and the studies carried out for clean energy in our country.

According to the information provided by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gökçekuş, mentioning about the studies on obtaining clean energy in the TRNC, also shared his suggestions regarding the precautions and measures to be taken in energy issues.

Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş presented the file including the results of studies they have carried out together with Assist. Prof. Dr. Youssef Kassem and with other academicians, and the papers presented at the conferences and published in the prestigious journals to the Minister of Economy and Energy Hasan Taçoy.

Use of wind and solar energy resources against climate change was focused on...
Prof. Gökçekuş also mentioned that global climate change effects are observed in our country as well as all over the world. Gökçekuş; "Timeless and heavy rains followed by floods lead to unexpected developments and loss of lives and property. From time to time, we experience the effects of global climate change in the form of long-term and effective droughts. The major cause of global climate change is the gas emitted from fossil fuels that we have been being used for years. One of the most important measures to be taken to confront this problem is the use of energy sources such as wind and solar, which we call clean energy and renewable energy. In this way, we will be able to prevent the negative effects of global climate change and obtain environmentally friendly clean energy. In this case, we will both protect our environment and contribute to our economy by replacing the gradually decreasing use of fossil fuels with much more beneficial alternatives.’

Emphasizing the advantages of the implementation of the work they have carried out, Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş stated that as a result of the studies carried out in different regions, there is an important wind energy potential in our country, and especially mentioned about the importance of turning the existing endless energy source such as the sun into an advantage, especially in a geography where the whole year is sunny. Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gökçekuş emphasized that wind and especially solar energy should be utilized in the optimum ratio under the light of the data obtained at the end of the calculations.

Minister Taçoy congratulated for the studies...
In his speech, Minister of Economy and Energy Hasan Taçoy said, “We will be honored to serve our country with our new works within the framework of the cooperation we have developed." and thanked Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş and his team for their studies. Minister Taçoy added that they are ready to do whatever is their duty in order to carry the works further.
