Republic of Turkey Ambassador to Nicosia, Ali Murat Başçeri drove the TRNC’s domestic and National Car “GÜNSEL B9”

Ali Murat Başçer Republic of Turkey Ambassador to Nicosia, did a test drive with the first model of the TRNC's domestic and national car GÜNSEL B9 which was created by Near East University-affiliated Turkish engineers and designers as a result of labor that lasted over 1.2 million hours.

Ali Murat Başçeri, who tested the vehicle in the driving area of GÜNSEL Production Facilities on the Near East University campus, was accompanied by Near East University Chairman of the Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel. Making a statement after the test drive, Ambassador Başçeri congratulated the Günsel Family, who invested in this field with a visionary approach at a time when the world automotive industry was experiencing an electric car revolution. Ali Murat Başçeri, after the test drive, visited GÜNSEL production facilities and received information about the studies.

Experiencing the performance of GÜNSEL B9 after test driving, the Republic of Turkey Ambassador to Nicosia, Ali Murat Başçeri said "While having a quiet and comfortable driving experience, rather have had the pleasure of perspectives that are aimed to be put forward with this car." Describing GÜNSEL as a precious product of the new age, the Ambassador also stated that he found it very important in terms of showing the research and development capacity of the Near East University.

Stating that he believes that this step taken for the production of electric vehicles in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will reach much more advanced dimensions in the coming periods, Ali Murat Başçeri said that it is proud that universities, which have an important role in the country, have come to point that will invest in the industry.

Drawing attention to the fact that there is a technological revolution in the world, Başçeri said, “We are in the age of information and informatics. Nations that can adapt to change and innovation have profited from this. I seriously consider this step taken to adapt to the technological revolution. In Turkey, in order to create an information and knowledge society we are taking serious steps. I am delighted to see the same steps taken in the TRNC."

About GÜNSEL
GÜNSEL B9 is a 100 percent electric car. The vehicle, which can travel 350 kilometers on a single charge, was produced by combining 10 thousand 936 parts in total. The engine of the vehicle has a power of 140 kW. The speed limit of GÜNSEL B9, which can reach 100 km / h in 8 seconds, was electronically limited to 170 km / h. The battery of GÜNSEL B9 can be charged in just 30 minutes with high-speed charging. In the case of fast charging, this time is 4 hours. The number of employees of GÜNSEL, where more than 100 engineers and designers spent 1.2 million hours in the development process, reached 166. This number, which will increase rapidly with the start of mass production, will rise to over a thousand by 2025.

Agreements with over 800 suppliers from 28 countries have been signed for the production of GÜNSEL B9. GÜNSEL Thus, have provided a significant contribution to TRNC to become a part of the global economy.

The second model of GÜNSEL, J9, will be produced in the SUV segment. The design concept of the J9, which was also designed as 100% electric, was also presented to the visitors at MUSIAD Expo 2020.

Electric cars are increasing their weight in the world automotive market every year. In 2018, the number of electric cars sold in the world was 2 million. Electric car sales, which are expected to reach 10 million by 2025, are expected to reach 28 million by 2030 and 56 million by 2040. Electric cars will take over 57 percent of the automotive market by 2040.
