Projects and strategies to strengthen the rights of the disabled were discussed at the “Disabled Rights Monitoring Workshop” held at the Near East University

The “Disabled Rights Monitoring Workshop” organized by the Near East University Disability Rights Monitoring Committee was held at the Near East University İrfan Günsel Congress Center.

The workshop, in which the sessions of “International Perspective on Monitoring the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”, “Disabled Rights Monitoring Projects and Suggestions” and “Awareness Training in Different Service Areas” were held, concluded with the “Deans Roundtable Meeting”.

The opening speech was made by the Head of the Near East University Social Research and Development Center Prof. Dr. Zehra Altınay and Prof. Dr. Gönül Akçamete, Dr. Achraf Othman and Dr. Deepika Kohli joined as invited speakers.

Invited speakers from Qatar and India attended the workshop.
In the first session, titled “International Perspective in Monitoring the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”, the Chairman of the Near East University Disability Rights Monitoring Committee Prof. Dr. Zehra Altınay talked about the studies of the committee and emphasized the issues of disability and being scientific, international projects and cooperation.

Head of Mada Innovation and Research Center from Qatar, Dr. Achraf Othman, on the other hand, made a presentation on “How sign language processing projects can provide opportunities for the hearing impaired: A look at Mada’s Jumla Sign Language Project”. From the Khalsa College of Education, India, Dr. Deepika Kohli gave a speech on the monitoring of disability rights.

In the session titled “Disabled Rights Monitoring Projects and Suggestions” moderated by Near East University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Dudu Özkum Yavuz, Near East University Disability Rights Monitoring Committee Member İnci Genç, President of the Cyprus Turkish Orthopedically Disabled Association Günay Kibrit and Refia Arı representing the Disabled Families Solidarity Association made speeches.

The moderator of the session held within the scope of Awareness Training in Different Service Areas was Dr. Menil Çelebi. In the session, committee members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mukaddes Sakallı Demirok, Expert Umran Duman, Assist. Prof. Dr. Kaan Uyar, Assist. Prof. Dr. Şahin Akdağ commented on the rights of the disabled in the fields of education, architecture and technology and offered suggestions on what should be done.

Disability rights were discussed at the roundtable meeting
In the “Deans’ Roundtable Meeting: Action Study” held in the last session of the workshop, the rights of the disabled and suggestions for their improvement were discussed. Near East University Faculty Member At the roundtable meeting moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nazım S. Burgul, Near East University Deputy Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt made statements. In his speech, Kurt drew attention to increasing international projects and establishing financial support, developing the committee’s policies and strategies, bringing the issue of accessibility to the agenda within the scope of the courses, and strengthening the coordination between the units. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt underlined that with the opinion and support of non-governmental organizations, more success can be achieved in solution-oriented studies.
