Prof. Dr. H. Seda Vatansever, founding Member of DESAM Research Institute and Scientific Research Projects Coordinator, one of the researchers of Near East University, was deemed worthy of the İhsan Numanoğlu Scientific Research Award with her work carried out together with Prof. Dr. Aydın Şencan at the “40. National Pediatric Surgery Congress”. The award dedicated to İhsan Numanoğlu, who made pediatric surgery an independent field of expertise in Turkey and founded the first contemporary official pediatric surgery clinic, is considered one of the most prestigious awards in the field.

The “40th Congress” was held in Ankara and lasted for four days, hosted by the Turkish Pediatric Surgery Association. “National Pediatric Surgery Congress” and “26. “National Pediatric Surgical Nursing Congress” was held simultaneously. Various topics such as neonatal, oncology, trauma and burn, urology and experimental studies were discussed at the congress. Various presentations such as oral presentations, poster presentations and videos were made at the congress, where current developments in the field of pediatric surgery were brought to the agenda with the participation of scientists from many parts of the world. At the congress, 93 oral presentations, 96 poster presentations, 14 case presentations and 10 video presentations, as well as a symposium and 5 panel presentations were held.

The study titled “Investigation of the effects and mechanisms of sucralfate on intestinal epithelial cells in an in vitro necrotizing enterocolitis model”, conducted by Prof. Dr. H. Seda Vatansever and Prof. Dr. Aydın Şencan, proposes a treatment that aims to reduce cell death in the ‘necrotizing enterocolitis’ problem, which is frequently encountered in newborns, by using an experimental model in a laboratory environment. ‘Necrotizing enterocolitis’, a digestive system emergency that is frequently encountered especially in neonatal units, occurs when the tissue in the inner layer of the small or large intestine is damaged and causes intestinal inflammation.
