Prime Minister Ünal Üstel underwent gallbladder surgery at Near East University Hospital

Minister of Health Hakan Dinçyürek and Near East University Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan held a press conference after the surgery to make statements about Prime Minister Ünal Üstel’s health condition.

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel underwent gallbladder surgery at Near East University Hospital. The surgery, performed by Near East University Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan, Anesthesia and Intensive Care Specialist Prof. Dr. Gülay Eren and General Surgeon Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Özant, lasted about an hour. Prime Minister Ünal Üstel’s gallbladder was removed with a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (closed gallbladder surgery).

Following the successful surgery, Minister of Health Hakan Dinçyürek and Near East University Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan held a press conference to make statements about Prime Minister Ünal Üstel’s health condition. The meeting, which was also attended by Prof. Dr. Gülay Eren and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Özant, was also followed by the President of the National Assembly of the Republic Ziya Öztürkler, Minister of National Education Nazım Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Finance Özdemir Berova and Lefkoşa deputies Ahmet Savaşan and Alişan Şan.


The surgery lasted one hour

Providing information about Prime Minister Üstel’s surgery at the meeting, Near East University Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan said, “After the gastroenterological and cardiological examinations performed at the Near East University Hospital yesterday, no pathology was detected that would explain our Prime Minister’s complaints other than gallbladder inflammation.” Stating that they started treatment yesterday to improve his complaints originating from his gallbladder with medical treatment, Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan said, “During our check-ups in the morning, it was seen that his complaints did not regress despite medical treatment, on the contrary, they progressed. Upon this situation, the decision for gallbladder surgery was made with general surgery, gastroenterology and radiology consultations.” Stating that Prime Minister Ünal Üstel underwent a closed gallbladder surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy), Prof. Dr. Balkan said, “We successfully completed the operation without any complications. Our Prime Minister is currently resting after the surgery.”

Minister of Health Hakan Dinçyürek reminded that Prime Minister Üstel applied to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Hospital yesterday morning with complaints such as severe abdominal pain and vomiting, and said, “Following the tests performed here, we referred him to Near East University Hospital due to the need for a gastroenterology consultation.” In the tests performed at Near East University Hospital, no findings were found that could explain the picture in the esophagus and stomach on their own. It was determined that the problem originated from the gallbladder. Since there was no regression in the complaints after our doctors’ attempts at medication, a decision for surgery was made today.” Emphasizing that the surgery was successful, Minister of Health Dinçyürek said, “What is important for us is that the surgery was successful and that our Prime Minister is in good health. After the recovery process, we will see our Prime Minister among us in good health.” Minister of Health Hakan Dinçyürek also said, “I would like to thank all our doctors and healthcare professionals who contributed to this process.”
