The market for cosmetics and personal care products continues to grow regularly every year. Making the wrong choice in these products that promise beauty can create the opposite results. Near East University Vocational School Head of Hair Care and Beauty Services Assist. Prof. Dr. Yeşim Üstün Aksoy gave information about the things to be considered while purchasing a cosmetic product and warned.

Pay attention to the chemical content!
Assist. Prof. Dr. Aksoy emphasized that the content of a product should be examined before buying it. Because some chemicals used in cosmetic products can cause great harm to health. Among the chemicals Assist. Prof. Dr. Aksoy drew attention are “Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), propylene glycol (PG), diethanolamine (DEA), cocamide DEA, lauramide DE A, fluorine, alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), aluminum. Aksoy pointed out that there are many chemicals such as butane, dioxin, fluorocarbons, formaldehyde, glycerin, kaolin, lanolin, mineral oil, petrolatum, propane, talc, chlorinated compounds, PEG (Polyethylene glycol) among those chemicals and it is obligatory to write the product composition, abbreviated as INCI (International Nomenclatune of Cosmetic Ingredients).

Products that have completed their shelf life tend to show carcinogenic and toxic effects
Assist. Prof. Dr. Yeşim Üstün Aksoy said that products that have completed their shelf life pose a great risk and said, “Products with an expired shelf life are more prone to show carcinogenic and toxic effects. Moreover, these products can cause the development of unexpected side effects and allergies. Buying your cosmetics from places where the sales cycle is fast can reduce this risk. It is also extremely important that cosmetics are stored in appropriate conditions throughout their shelf life. Special storage conditions must be established for products that will be affected by heat, light and humidity. Otherwise, these products may deteriorate even if they have not completed their shelf life. The odor, consistency and color of the spoiled product changes and the water/oil phase is seen as separated. Never use such deteriorated products.”

Take care to choose organic products
Making suggestions for the use of products with organic product certificate, obtained from plant sources and friendly to human health and the environment, Assist. Prof. Dr. Aksoy said, “If you cannot buy completely organic products, prefer to use products with low synthetic material content. Choose products with simpler content instead of products that contain too much raw materials.”

Stating that it is necessary to be more careful when choosing a cosmetic product for pregnant women, women who are breastfeeding, those with pronounced allergies, skin diseases, babies, and children in developmental age, Assist. Prof. Dr. Aksoy stated that especially pregnant women, babies and children of developmental age should avoid scented products. Assist. Prof. Dr. Aksoy added that unpackaged and damaged products should definitely not be purchased and that the purchased products should be checked whether they are approved by the Ministry of Health.
