Orhan Demircan, nicknamed Fundo, who trained many successful athletes as a physical education teacher for many years and made our country proud by achieving great success in the field of athletics, regained his health after a successful operation performed by the Head of Brain and Nerve Surgery Department surgery team lead by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğa Gürkanlar.

Partial fractures had occurred at the junction point of the head and neck after the fall
Orhan Demircan, who had a hard time and had to have his left leg amputated due to diabetes in recent months, has encountered the problem of a neck fracture as a result of an accident while he was about to regain his health.

Orhan Demircan, who had partial fractures in the first and second vertebral bones at the junction of the head and neck, was transferred to the Near East University Hospital by the TRNC Ministry of Health for a rare and difficult surgical operation. After the operation, Orhan Demircan is expected to stand up and walk in a short while with the physical therapy and rehabilitation program he will be undergone.

Providing information about the surgery, which lasted about 4 hours, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğa Gürkanlar stated that as a result of the accident partial fractures occurred in the 1st and 2nd vertebrae, which are the junction point of the head and neck of the patient, and this situation impairs the stability at the head and neck junction and poses the risk of paralysis due to spinal cord injury for the patient.

Stating that the fractures were brought together during the operation and the head and neck of the patient were fixed to each other with screws, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğa Gürkanlar noted that this way, a possible spinal cord injury was prevented.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğa Gürkanlar: “In addition to the rarity of the surgery and the need for a high-level surgical technique, the advanced age of the patient was a negative factor that made the surgery difficult and could negatively affect the healing process in terms of bone healing. Together with my team, we overcame all these difficulties and successfully performed the surgery. We are extremely happy to be beneficial to our patients. It is also a source of pride for me and my team to be able to successfully perform many cases requiring such critical operations in our country, especially during the pandemic period, and to assist our patients.”
