Organized by Near East University, Conference Series – 100 Top Turkish Scientists continues with intensive interest

In order to provide forum for scholars and keynote lecturers to address scientific issues, to present their scientific studies and promote the scientific studies for new discoveries, Near East University organized Conference Series on '100 Reasons to Do Science'. Scheduled to host Top100 Turkish Scientists from all around the world, the Conference Series hosted Professor Ahmet Murat TEKALP as the keynote speaker of the third forum. Prof. Dr. TEKALP has carried out significant scientific studies on Digital Image and Video Processing so far and his publications are among the most cited scientific studies.

Within NEU’s fundamental objective and innovative approach towards transforming the society via education and scholar research, the third forum of the Conference Series on '100 Reasons to Do Science' was realized with the participation of Prof. Dr. Murat TEKALP, one of the forerunners of the scientific studies on signal proccessing, and digital image and video proccessing.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University, the third forum of the Conference Series was held at Near East University Hospital Conference Hall 101. During the conference, Professor Murat Tekalp addressed issues relevant to digital image, video processing, image and video compression and video networking. He also delivered information on software-defined network (SDN), which is a system that turns complexity into simplicity in the network world. He also touched upon the crucial role of traffic engineering in optimizing the performance of a telecommunications network by dynamically analyzing, predicting and regulating the behavior of data transmitted over that network.

The Conferrence attracted intensive interest

At the end of his presentation, Professor TEKALP answered the respective questions directed to him and extended his appreciations to NEU Rectorate, faculty members and students for their intense interest in the conference. Near East University vice Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa KURT expressed his satisfaction with the intense interest in the Conference Series on '100 reasons to Do Science' and extended his appreciations to Prof. Dr. TEKALP for honoring them with his participation to the conference.


Who is Prof. Dr. Murat TEKALP?

Murat Tekalp was born in Istanbul in 1958. He received BS degrees (dual degree) in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Bogazici University in 1980 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1982 and 1984, respectively. He has been with Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, New York, from1984 to 1987. In 1987, He began his academic career as an assistant professor at the University of Rochester New York, where he was named as Associate Professor in 1990, Professor in 1995 and Distinguished University Professor in 2000. Murat TEKALP, who is currently a Professor at Koc University, Istanbul, Turkey, had been a guest faculty member at the Bilkent University in 1992-1993 and at Sabancı University in 1999-2000.

Prof. TEKALP is a Fellow of IEEE and a member of Turkish Academy of Sciences and Academia Europaea. He was named as Distinguished Lecturer by IEEE Signal Processing Society in 1998, and awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholarship in 1999. He received the TUBITAK Science Award (highest scientific award in Turkey) in 2004. He chaired the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committee on Image and Multidimensional Signal Processing from 1996 to 1997. He has been serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier journal Signal Processing: Image Communication since 1999.

As January 2004, Professor TEKALP had 88 articles that published in peer-reviewed journals that accessible on Science Citation Index. These publications received 1240 citations.
