
Deans of nursing faculties of 16 universities providing nursing education came together at Near East University.
The Nursing Faculties Deans Council (HEMDEK), established to increase quality and collaboration in nursing education, gathered at the İrfan Günsel Congress Center at an academic event hosted by Near East University. The meeting held at Near East University, which has the only nursing faculty in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, discussed the problems of nursing education, its future and possible collaborations.
Nursing deans of Adnan Menderes University, Akdeniz University, Ankara University, Atatürk University, Dokuz Eylül University, Ege University, Gazi University, Istanbul University, Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, İnönü University, Koç University, Mersin University, Necmettin Erbakan University and Health Sciences University attended the event. Near East University Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ visited the faculty deans before the meeting and conveyed his welcome wishes.
The meeting focused on the current status of nursing education and problems in education, joint projects and issues that will support professional development were brought to the agenda. Studies carried out to increase quality in education, strengthen cooperation between faculties and adapt to innovations required by the age were discussed.
The election of the new term president of the Nursing Faculties Deans Council was also realized. As a result of the voting, Ege University Faculty of Nursing Dean Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Dönmez became the new term president of the council. At the meeting, Necmettin Erbakan University Faculty of Nursing Dean Prof. Dr. Emel Ege handed over her presidency to Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Dönmez.

Various visits were also made to the Near East University campus within the scope of the meeting. Participants visited the Grand Library and Near East University Hospital on the campus, as well as the Cyprus Car Museum and the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts located on the campus. As part of the TRNC visits, historical and cultural points such as Kyrenia Castle, Kyrenia Yavuz Landing Beach, Karaoğlanoğlu Martyrdom, Bellapais Monastery and St. Hilarion Castle, as well as Kyrenia market and old port were also visited.

The former president of the Nursing Faculties Council (HEMDEK) and Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at Necmettin Erbakan University, Prof. Dr. Emel Ege, said, “I hope that the meeting where issues related to nursing education were discussed will contribute to the development of the quality of education.” and added, “On behalf of the council members, I would like to thank the Near East University family for hosting us.”
Ege University Faculty of Nursing Dean Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Dönmez, who was elected as the HEMDEK President at the meeting, also thanked Near East University for hosting the meeting. “I would like to thank the Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Prof. Dr. Ümran Yılmaz Dal and their teams for being our hosts.” said Prof. Dr. Dönmez, adding, “We have made important decisions regarding undergraduate and graduate nursing education in our sister country Cyprus. Seeing the reflection of the results of these decisions in Turkey makes us happy in terms of the integrity of both countries.”

Reminding that the Faculty of Nursing of Near East University is the only faculty in the TRNC that provides education in this field, the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing of Near East University Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz said, “We are very delighted to host the esteemed deans of Turkey’s deep-rooted institutions in nursing education in Cyprus. On the occasion of the Nursing Faculties Deans Council meeting, we had the opportunity to make important sharings for the future of our profession and to develop collaborations in line with common goals.”
Stating that “The strengthening of the nursing profession, which plays a very important role both in health services and social life, is only possible with quality education.” Prof. Dr. Ümran Yılmaz Dal said, “In this context, increasing the interaction between faculties, developing joint projects and raising quality standards together are of great importance. These issues were among the priority agenda items in our meeting. As Near East University, with the awareness of the responsibility of being the only nursing faculty in the TRNC, we will continue to establish strong collaborations both nationally and internationally.”
