New Hopes for AIDS Treatment: Specialists in the Field Will Gather at Near East University!

Innovations in HIV/AIDS research and treatment processes will be discussed at Near East University on December 1-2 during the “New Hopes for Treatment” awareness days.
HIV/AIDS continues to be a serious health problem affecting millions of people worldwide. While it can now be managed more effectively thanks to modern treatments and research, it is crucial to follow current scientific developments and continue awareness-raising efforts in the fight against the disease. In this context, “New Hopes for Treatment,” organized jointly by Near East University and Kocaeli University, will be hosted by Near East University on December 1-2.

Near East University Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ and Kocaeli University Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Prof. Dr. The awareness days, coordinated by Sıla Akhan, aim to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS, share innovations in treatment, and create a multidisciplinary scientific platform by bringing together expert scientists in the field.

The two-day congress will feature a total of nine sessions. The program will cover current scientific developments in HIV/AIDS in detail, assessing key topics such as HIV pathogenesis, subtypes, drug resistance, vaccination studies, and public awareness. Experts will also discuss topics such as coinfections, geriatric cases, preventive approaches, and the role of artificial intelligence in HIV research. Throughout the congress, new treatment options and recent research developments will be presented to participants from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Scientific Developments and Public Awareness Under the Same Roof!
The awareness days will begin on December 1st with opening remarks by Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ and Prof. Dr. Sıla Akhan, titled “How Can Public Awareness Be Raised? Could HIV Become a Pandemic?” Following the opening ceremony, three sessions will be held throughout the day. The first session will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Şükran Köse, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Sargın Altunok will present “HIV Pathogenesis.” In the second session, Prof. Dr. Atahan Çağatay will moderate the session, and Prof. Dr. Murat Sayan will comment on “Current Status of HIV Subtypes and Resistance.” The final session of the first day will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Kaya Süer, and the topic of “HIV and Vaccines” will be discussed. Prof. Dr. Seniha Şenbayrak will present “Necessary Vaccines for HIV,” and Prof. Dr. Ediz Tütüncü will present “Why HIV Vaccine Studies Are Failing to Achieve Success.”

Broad-Perspective Scientific discussions to continue on day two
The second day of the awareness days will continue with a busy scientific program consisting of six sessions. In the first session, under the chair of Prof. Dr. Gülden Ersöz and Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Pullukçu, researchers Assist. Ayşenur Cihanoğlu, Assist. Oğuzhan Yeykan, and Assist. Sevim Hazal Özel will discuss “Let’s Discuss Difficult Cases.” The second session, moderated by Prof. Dr. Seniha Şenbayrak, Prof. Dr. Derya Öztürk Engin, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kemal Çelen, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asuman İnan, will begin with a presentation by Prof. Dr. Müge Toygar Deniz on “Cardiovascular Health”; Dr. Özlem Güler on “CNS and Eye Effects; research Assist. İrem Asena Doğan Öntaş on “Metabolic Health” and Lecturer Gamze Kara and Lecturer Cemile Çakmak on “Let’s Discuss Pregnancy and HIV Cases.”

Later in the day, in the sessions chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Sargın Altunok, Prof. Dr. Yeşim Taşova, Prof. Dr. Murat Sayan, and Prof. Dr. Ediz Tütüncü, Prof. Dr. Deniz Gür Altunay and Prof. Dr. Kağan Özdemir will present “HIV and Aging; Geriatric Cases”; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asuman İnan will present “PrEP and PEP: Two Faces of Prevention”; Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ will present “Artificial Intelligence in HIV”; and Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Pullukçu will present “New Treatment Options” on the basis of the current scientific data and new approaches. The sessions will also feature a presentation by Specialist Dr. Sonay Arslan titled “Current Studies from Our Country” and a presentation by Specialist Dr. Sedef Özbalıkçı titled “The Situation of HCV and HIV Co-infection in Turkey.”

Near East University Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ stated that sharing current scientific developments and innovative treatment approaches in the field of HIV/AIDS is crucial for raising academic and public awareness. He said, “The awareness days will be an important platform where specialists from different disciplines can come together and exchange information.” Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ noted that collaborations between universities strengthen both academic research and public awareness. He added, “With the awareness days we will organize together with Kocaeli University, our goal is to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS among scientists and various segments of society and to discuss new treatment options.”
