Earthquake-friendly soil and building technologies will be discussed with international participation at the international conference titled “New Developments in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering”, which will be hosted by the Near East University for the fifth time. The conference will be held at the Near East University Atatürk Culture and Congress Center between 30 June and 2 July 2022.

The Honorary Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the conference organized by the Turkish Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Association and the Near East University will be the Honorary President of the Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Association and the Former Rector of Boğaziçi University. Prof. Dr. Ergün Toğrol. Organizing Committee Presidency will be shared by Prof. Dr. Feyza Çinicioğlu, who carried out the presidency of Turkish Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Association between the years 2011-2021, and Head of the Near East University Earthquake and Soil Research and Evaluation Center Prof. Dr. Cavit Atalar.

In the first four conferences attended by 1,250 scientists, 345 papers were presented in 75 sessions.
At the conference, which will be one of the most important conferences of the World Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Association, very important scientific data in the field of geotechnical engineering, including soil mechanics and earthquake engineering, will be shared. The book, which will consist of the proceedings of the conference titled “5th New Developments in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering”, will be published with the Scopus index.

To date, four of the conferences held in 2003, 2009, 2012 and 2016 were carried out at the Near East University Atatürk Culture and Congress Center. In the first four conferences, which were held with the contribution and participation of 1250 scientists in total, more than 345 papers were presented in 75 sessions, and an important scientific knowledge was created in this field.

Prof. Dr. Cavit Atalar: “The earthquakes we have experienced in recent history have once again demonstrated that the TRNC is an earthquake country.”
Near East University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Cavit Atalar reminding that earthquakes occurred in the west of Cyprus with 22 days intervals in 2022 and caused great fear, said, “The earthquakes of 6.6 magnitude on 11 January, 4.5 on 28 January and 5.3 on 02 February once again revealed the fact that TRNC is an earthquake country.” Stating that important scientific data on earthquake damage reduction will be shared at the New Developments in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Conference, Prof. Dr.Atalar said, “Soil properties and soil characterization, shallow and deep foundations, soil improvements, excavations, support systems, soil retaining structures and underground systems, earthquake geotechnical engineering and related problems, slope stability and landslides, embankments, environmental protection, water and energy, modeling, special and new topics in geotechnical engineering will be discussed and reviewed.”
