Near East University provides support against COVID-19 outbreak...

The Super Computer, located in the Near East University Innovation and Information Technologies Center, which is one of the most powerful super computers of the world and has been supporting the scientific projects around the world with its capacity to perform approximately 20 trillion operations and data analysis per second, is in use to fight with the new coronavirus which is declared to be pandemic by the World Health Organization.

According to the press statement made by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, the Super Computer is used in the investigation of the viral protein carried out by the Baker laboratory in the Rosetta@home project, a study against the COVID-19 disease known as the New Coronary virus caused by the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The information to be obtained as a result of the examinations will be used to guide the design of new vaccines and antiviral drugs against the New Coronavirus.

Near East University Super Computer processed 150,19 quadrillion mathematical operations in less than 36 hours, and transferred the results of the process to the servers of the Rosetta@home project.

Studies on outbreak diseases ...
Rosetta@home, Berkeley Network Computing is an estimated distributed calculation project for determining the three-dimensional shapes of the protein structure of viruses on the Open Infrastructure (BOINC) platform. The Rosetta@home project has so far worked on diseases such as Alzheimer's, HIV, malaria. In the fight of the Rosetta@ Home Project with Coronavirus, it takes the role of quickly obtaining information about how the proteins that make up the virus appear and how they function.

Previously used for Ebola outbreak…
Located in the Near East University Innovation and Information Technologies Center in 2007, the Super Computer was used in the USA-based campaign to urgently produce a scientific remedy against the deadly Ebola virus and its derivatives that started in West Africa and threatened the whole world. Supporting worldwide science projects to date, the Super Computer was used with full potential to support the international scientific struggle initiated by the Scripps Research Institute in California, USA, to find out the most effective medical solution against the Ebola virus.

Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel: “We will continue to serve for community health…”
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East University Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel stating that while countries are trying to ensure their security against the new Coronavirus, which has become one of the major global outbreaks of human history, said that the scientists have been continuing to work on an effective treatment on the coronavirus and that, as Near East University, they have been supporting the studies carried out scientifically against the prevention of disease. Stating that the Super Computer located in the Near East University Innovation Center is used in the research projects to obtain data to guide the development of vaccines and antiviral drugs related to the new Coronavirus.

Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel noted that the SP is processing the mathematical data in the study of spike proteins of the new Coronavirus. Stating that they support all the studies in order to prevent the epidemic related to the virus seen in our country, Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel said, “Our priority is to protect the health of our employees and students. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, which is spreading rapidly in the world, we have taken all necessary measures at the university. We organized informative conferences, seminars and meetings for students, academics, parents, administrative staff and employees against the new Coronavirus. We prepared informative posters, announcements and video films. Infection specialists working at our Near East University Hospital and our faculty members working at our Faculty of Medicine and other faculties constantly inform the public about the things to be done, by taking part in the Scientific Board formed in the fight against the new Coronavirus in our country. As both the university and the Near East University Hospital, we mobilized all our means to overcome this difficult process of our country against the coronavirus, which is called COVID-19 disease. The most concrete way to combat this virus is to care about hygiene. I believe we can show the necessary social sensitivity and we can overcome this difficult process together.”
