Near East University student Serkan Demirkol will represent the TRNC at the Turkish Universities Boxing Championship

Near East University Faculty of Sports Sciences student Serkan Demirkol will represent the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus at the Turkey Inter-University Boxing Championship organized by the University Sports Federation of Turkey.

Serkan Demirkol, a 3rd-year student at the Near East University Faculty of Sports Sciences, coaching department, will go to the ring for the +92 kg championship at the Turkish Universities Boxing Championship (BOKS ÜNİLİG), which will be held by the University Sports Federation of Turkey between 28 March – 1 April in Balıkesir, Turkey. In the tournament where the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will be represented for the first time, the top athletes will be selected for the Turkish National Team and will have the right to compete in the World University Boxing Championship.

Serkan Demirkol, who performs his training at the Near East Sports Tower together with his boxing trainer Dindar Gölçek, with the goal of becoming the champion in +92 kilograms class, continues his conditioning, strength and fitness training in company with the Sports Tower Manager Turgut Zabit. Near East University Faculty of Sports Sciences 3rd year student Serkan Demirkol will be a first for the TRNC if he becomes the champion in the tournament where more than 50 universities are expected to participate.

Serkan Demirkol, who is on an intense training program since the tournament is only a short time away, said, “I continue to work hard to make the best use of this opportunity offered by Near East University. I finish the day with three workouts. I want to represent the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Near East University in the best possible way.”

Dindar Gölçek: “As champions, we want to qualify for the World University Boxing Championship.”
Dindar Gölçek, one of the coaches who have been training Serkan Demirkol for this challenging tournament, is a name that won the championship in the same tournament in 2010. In his professional boxing career, Gölçek has achievements in Turkey and Europe as a Fenerbahçe and Security Sports Club athlete. Nowadays, he transfers his experience to Serkan Demirkol with the trainings they continue at the Near East Sports Tower. “We believe that we will come back from the tournament with a medal,” says Gölçek, “We want to qualify for the World University Boxing Championship, which will be held in 2022, by being ranked in the Universities Boxing Championship of Turkey.”

Near East Sports Tower Manager Turgut Zabit, on the other hand, states that they are proud to represent the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Near East University in the Turkey Inter-University Boxing Championship by breaking new ground. Expressing that Serkan Demirkol trained very hard to become a champion and his training performance was very good, Zabit said, “We hope that our efforts will be rewarded. As champions, we aim to make an important contribution to TRNC boxing.”

We aim for the championship in order to be a good start for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and our University in boxing.”
