-Near East University is making a contribution to one of the world’s leading scientific studies…

-Near East University Faculty of Engineering is representing the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in an experiment which explores the formation of matter…

Academic Member of the Near East University Faculty of Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail Ruhi Uman, is representing both Turkey and the TRNC in an experiment, BESIII (Balloon-borne Experiment), which involves particle physics; that aims to determine fundamental laws that controls the make-up of matter and the physical universe.

According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, academic member of the Near East University Faculty of Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail Ruhi Uman, made a statement, expressing that this current experiment, similar to the ATLAS experiment which was conducted in CERN laboratory- Switzerland, the BESIII experiment is being conducted with the participation of a total of ten countries including America, Russia, Germany, Switzerland and China; and further added that the experiment is being conducted in Beijing,BEPC laboratories in China.

BESIII experiment focuses on particles with 3-4 Giga Electron Volt energy…

It was expressed that the BESIII involved the examination of quarks; any of a number of subatomic particles carrying a fractional electric charge, postulated as building blocks of the hadrons. Quarks have not been directly observed but theoretical predictions based on their existence have been previously confirmed experimentally. In this regard, BESIII is expressed to focus on particles with 3-4 GEV ( Giga Electron Volt). Academic Member of the Near East University Faculty of Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail Ruhi Uman is contributing to this experiment via using the NEU Super Computer and helping with the calculations of the experiment.

It was revealed that previously conducted experiments in this field had been published in journals with highest impact factor…

During the period of September 2015 and January 2016, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail Ruhi Uman from Near East University Faculty of Engineering has published 4 articles on particle physics and BESIII in journals with high impact factor and has represented the Near East University.

Who is Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail Ruhi Uman?

İsmail Ruhi Uman is a particle physicist who had previously taken part in various leading experiments of the world such as; LNGS, CERN, FERMILAB, IHEP.He was born in Istanbul in 1963 and is both a Turkish and an Italian citizen. In 1993, he has graduated from Department of Physics of University of Perugia, in Italy.

He has gained his first experience in the field of particle physics in the LVD experiment which was conducted Gran Sasso: Chamber of Physics, which is the world's largest underground laboratory. Here cosmic rays coming from the space and neutrons were investigated. Since 1995, İsmail Ruhi Uman has also been taking part in CERN experiments and is continuing his spectroscopy studies. He completed his doctorate study in Lüdwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany, in 2001.

Besides studies in Europe, he worked as a researcher in Northwestern University in Chicago and Fermilab particle accelerator complex, and he is taking part in BESIII experiment in Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), in China. He has also made a contribution to the designing of the Turkish particle accelerator centre via the State Planning Organisation.
