International Istanbul Breast Cancer Conference - BREASTANBUL, which has become a known brand over the world in a short time, is a multidisciplinary meeting focusing exclusively on breast cancer. The Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Professor Meltem Nalça Andrieu attended the 3rd International Istanbul Breast Cancer Conference - BREASTANBUL 2018, which was held in Istanbul Wyndham Grand Hotel on 11-13 October 2018.
"Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women populations in developed countries. About 1 in 8 women in the U.S. and 1 in 12 women in our country have risk to develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Since breast cancer can be fatal, many research studies are conducted to develop innovative medical treatment options. Therefore, very significant and innovative multidisciplinary approaches offering novel treatment options for breast cancer have been emerging. During the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place throughout October every year, various events are organized to raise awareness about the disease and raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Highlighting the crucial role of scientific studies in discovering novel diagnostic or treatment techniques, Professor Meltem Nalça Andrieu stated that the study on "Radiofrequency ablation in very small, localized breast cancer and mastectomy with endoscopic surgery" that presented by the Japanese Professor Fukuma at the conference was one of the notable innovations in breast cancer treatment. "Robotic breast surgery in Turkey, short-course radiotherapy techniques for appropriate patients, neoadjuvant therapies to shrink breast cancer prior to surgery, systematic therapies chosen by taking the molecular properties of the tumors into consideration, goal-oriented and personalized treatments, and oncoplastic surgical methods, which are becoming increasingly widespread, were also discussed by worldwide renowned experts" noted she.
