Near East University has now opened its Department of Cartoon and Animation

Accredited by both the Council for Higher Education Planning, Evaluation and Accreditation of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (YÖDAK) and Higher Education Board of Turkey (YÖK), the Department of Cartoon and Animation of Near East University, which is to run a four year undergraduate program, is to have Turkish as the language of instruction.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the Department of Cartoon and Animation is to commence its education and training within the academic year of 2018-2019 and furthermore, it has been announced that a total of 30 students will be registered to the department with scholarships as 100%, 75% and 50%.

It was pointed out that over the past few years, cartoon and animation has created a sector which is developing and offering opportunities for different professions and bearing this in mind, the Near East University officials felt the urge to meet for the needs of this sector by aiming to raise competent and skilled individuals for the field.

Cartoon and Animation Artists will be raised…
Knowledgeable, highly competent cartoon and animation artists who are equipped with certain skills and practice using the most contemporary technical and digital tools will be raised at the Department of Cartoon and Animation. Additionally, the graduates of this department will be able to compete in various platforms as they will be educated and trained at world standards.

Providing details regarding the four year degree program to be run by the department, it was stated that a total of 50 modules will be taken, of which 19 is theoretical and 31 is applied over 8 semesters. Students will take modules such as pattern, character design, 2B-3B animation techniques, fiction, visual-design, illustration, graphics, cartoon and animation; alongside practical experience such as projects and internships.

Highly Competent Cartoon and Animation Artists will be raised for the cartoon and animation sector…
Students to graduate from this department will be able to work as an illustrator, cartoon film designer, animation artist, an academician in this field, video-fiction operator, producer, special-effects operator, 2D-3D modelling specialist, game designer, animation film critic, an educator and character designer, or pick up jobs at multi-media firms, commercial agencies and TV stations.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. GökçeKeçeci: “We will be raising individuals with high technical skills, who have genuine ideas and produce cartoons and animations!”
Deputy Dean of Faculty of Communication of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Keçeci, expressed that as a faculty they were aiming to educate and train individuals who are able to pick up careers in multiple disciplines rather than specialize in a single field; therefore raise professionals with high technical skills, who own genuine ideas and produce well-designed cartoons and animations.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Keçeci emphasised that cartoon and animation artists became a sector and a sought-after profession, who work under the overarching field of communication; within the sectors of cinema, TV, commercialism, and broadcast designing. In other words it was stated that the graduates of this department will be able to work in as designers, character animator, graphic designer, video- producer, user of storyboard techniques, in short any field involved in the sector of cartoon and animation.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Keçeci stated that the Department of Cartoon and Animation building on Near East University campus comprises lecture rooms suitable for 40 or 80 people and an animation and computer laboratory with a capacity of 70 people, studio-amphitheatre of capacity of 200 people, alongside professional photography, television studios. Furthermore, it was stated that the NEU Department of Cartoon and Animation will be functioning with full cooperation with the NEU Departments of Radio, Television and Cinema; and Department of Visual Communication and Design.
