Near East University Faculty of Medicine Department of Paediatrics has been represented at the 13th World Congress on Perinatal Medicine, which was held in Serbia, via two verbal presentations on neonatology. It was revealed that there were participants from many different countries around the world and that Neonatologist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ceyhun Dalkan from the Faculty of Medicine of Near East University successfully represented the university.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, universities from four different continents were represented at the congress; where issues encountered prior and after birth were discussed via contemporary perspectives. Furthermore, perinatology, neonatology, obstetrics, paediatrics, perinatal pathology, paediatric surgery, paediatric cardiology and genetics specialists participated in the congress and shared their views and research on issues regarding pregnancy and postpartum periods.

Providing further details, it was stated that Academic Member of Near East University Faculty of Medicine Department of Paediatrics, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ceyhun Dalkan made a verbal presentation on a research carried out at Near East University Hospital and supported by DESAM/BAP, titled as: “Exposure to high dose bisphenol: Effects on TSH levels in newborn baby boy: Northern Cyprus Cohort Study” and “Bisphenol A levels in umbilical cord blood and anthropometric measurements, and relationship between skinfold thickness and umbilical cord blood adiponectic, leptin levels: Northern Cyprus Cohort study”. It was pointed out that both presentations had drawn a lot of interest at the WCPM-2017 particularly due to discussions on effects of environmental pollutants on human health.

Mums-to-be need to cautious regarding plastic usage during pregnancy to protect their babies from being negative effects...

According to the scientific research plastic usage during pregnancy and the amount of Bisphenol A in food have a negative effect especially on the thyroid hormones of newborns, their growth and other issues at the postpartum period. In this regard, mums-to-be are advised to be cautious about plastic usage during pregnancy to protect their babies from the negative effects of Bisphenol A. Moreover, it was emphasised that there was a strong need for educational programs, further studies to be conducted in our country so as to raise awareness on the issue.
