Head of NEU Faculty of Medicine Department of Medical Biochemistry, Prof. Dr. Nazmi ÖZER, has been elected as the Head of FEBS Federation with the votes from 45 European countries.

As one of Europe’s biggest organisations in the molecular life sciences, the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) brings together many scientists from Europe and neighbouring regions to provide opportunities for academic research and teaching community in Europe and beyond to share issues in the field. The FEBS organises a congress each year and very recently, the 42nd Congress of the FEBS was realised in Jerusalem, Israel.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the NEU was successfully represented at the 42nd Congress of FEBS with four posters designed on the thesis projects of postgraduate students (master’s) of NEU Faculty of Medicine Department of Molecular Biochemistry graduating during 2015 and 2016.

These four posters were as follows:

Doctorate student at the Department, Osman YETKİN presented a poster titled as “Kinetic Behaviour of Horse Serum Butyrylcholinesterase with Fluoxetine”

Furthermore, Academic Members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özlem DALMIZRAK and Prof. Dr. Nevbahar TURGAN presented “Hypericin: A potent inhibitor of glutathione reductase purified from baker’s yeast” and “Enhanced Down-Regulation of BIRC2 and BIRC3 Antiapoptotic Proteins with No Donor DETA-NONOate in Prostate DU-145 CSCs:Potential for Combination Therapy”. Moreover, the poster presented by Head of Department of Molecular Biochemistry Prof. Dr. Nazmi ÖZER titled as “Antidepressant fluoxetine inhibits baker’s yeast glutathione reductase” has received a lot of attention at the congress.

Prof. Dr. Nazmi ÖZER has been appointed as the Head of Federation with votes from 45 different European Countries...

Starting from September 2017, Prof. Dr. Nazmi ÖZER has been appointed as Head of FEBS, which will last for two years, and has thus became a source of pride for both the Near East University and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Continuing over the past 27 years, one of the largest congresses in Turkey, National Biochemistry Congress, has been converted into an international event on its 28th year and this congress has been realised as the International Biochemistry Congress in Atatürk University on 19-23 September 2017 in Erzurum, Turkey.

Prof. Dr. Nazmi ÖZER acted as a spokesperson at Biochemistry Panel of this Congress and also as the Honorary President of the congress. His talk on “Master’s and Doctorate Education in Medical Biochemistry” drew a lot of attention of the attendants of the congress. Additionally, Academic Member of Department of Medical Biochemistry, Assist. Prof. Dr. Kerem TERALI’s verbal presentation titled as “The effect of Biological Pesticide Abamectin on Mammal Butrylcholinesterase: Experimental and Calculative study” received a lot of praise.

Academic Members of Department of Medical Biochemistry also presented three posters on the theses of master’s graduates during 2015-2016/ Spring Term and the poster titled as “The relation of Thrombomodulin -1748 G/C Polymorphism and Plasma Thrombomodulin in Diabetic Micro-vascular Complications” of which Prof. Dr. Nevbahar TURGAN was the corresponding author, received the best poster award.

Another moment of truth at the International Biochemistry Congress-2017 was when the Turkish Biochemistry Society (TBD) gave an award named after the Head of Department of Medical Biochemistry of Faculty of Medicine of Near East University, Prof. Dr. Nazmi ÖZER, titled as the Prof. Dr. Nazmi ÖZER Science Award 2017 and worth a thousand Euros.

Academic Members of Department of Medical Biochemistry expressed appreciation to Near East University for the support given to publish the summary of their verbal and poster presentations in The FEBS Journal and the Turkish Journal of Biochemistry and further added that with their accumulated expertise and team spirit, they will be continuing to work hard to make further achievements in the future.
