Near East University Faculty of Communication held a “Press Freedom Conference” due to the World Press Freedom Day

Head of Department of Radio, TV and Cinema of Faculty of Communication of Near East University Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fevzi Kasap and Academic Member Ayhan Dolunay coordinated the “Press Freedom Conference” due to World Press Freedom Day celebrated on 3rd May worldwide.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the conference was held in orange hall of NEU Faculty of Communication and it was realised with the presence of Vice Rector of Near East University Assoc. Prof Dr. Mustafa Kurt; Deputy Dean of Faculty of Communication Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Keçeci; Vice Dean Assist. Prof. Dr. Pelin Agocuk; Head of Department of Public Relations and Advertising Assist. Prof. Dr. Nuran Öze; Head of Department of Filmmaking and Broadcasting Assist. Prof. Dr. İzlem Kanlı; Academic Members from Faculty of Communication and other faculties, guests from the media and students.

It was stated that due to the new strategy identified at the General Conference of UNSECO, held in 1989, the Windhoek Declaration was declared. Windhoek Declaration is a statement of press freedom principles put together by African newspaper journalists in 1991. The Declaration was produced at a UNESCO seminar titled as “Promoting an Independent and Pluralistic African Press which was held in Windhoek, Namibia from 29th April to 3rd May 1991.


Referring to the Article 19 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 20 December 1993, `freedom of expression and opinion’ which declares that everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression-this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers, 3 May was declared as the “World Press Freedom Day”

Experienced Speakers: Significant Issues Discussed…
It was pointed out that Head of Department of Radio, TV and Cinema of NEU Faculty of Communication, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fevzi Kasap moderated, Chair of Media Ethical Board Dr. Bekir Azgın, Experienced Journalist Akay Cemal and NEU Legal Advisor and Academic Member of NEU Faculty of Communication Ayhan Dolunay were speakers at the conference. Additionally, NEU Communication Club students actively participated in the organisation.
