Near East University Atatürk Education Faculty Social Sciences and Turkish Education Department Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yeniasır and Deputy Head of Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Gökbulut gave a course on “Good and Effective Speaking” to teachers working at different levels under the Ministry of National Education. As in-service training, the courses, which were held in Famagusta, Nicosia, Kyrenia and Güzelyurt districts between September 2 and 9, 2022, and attended by a total of approximately 250 teachers, attracted great interest.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yeniasır and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Gökbulut stated that “Eloquence and Effective Speaking” is important for every profession, but that much more attention should be paid to this in the teaching profession. Yeniasır and Gökbulut emphasized that individuals with good rhetoric have an important place in society, they listen carefully, they are cared for by others, they are taken seriously and they are always at the forefront.

Effective speaking skills can be developed
Yeniasır and Gökbulut stated that the self-confidence of people who express themselves well in social relations and use their tone of voice and body language effectively improves much more than usual, and they also said that it is possible to develop effective and eloquent speech through education and this talent should not be seen as an innate talent, it can well be gained later. Emphasizing that one of the most important goals of Turkish Language Teaching departments in universities is to improve the four basic language skills of students, the researchers stated that teachers should allocate the necessary time to studying “Turkish” in primary education and “Turkish Literature” in secondary education and give each student sufficient opportunities to speak and write in classroom activities in order to improve their language skills.

In the continuation of the courses, the researchers, who revealed the characteristics of a good speech and speaker, also emphasized how a qualified voice should be, and made various applications on voice development techniques with the participants.
